An opportunity has arisen for a Medical Examiner's Officer within the Mortuary Services based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
The post has been established to support the Service Manager & Lead Medical Examiner in running an effective and comprehensive Medical Examiner's office/service for Chesterfield Royal Hospital and NE Derbyshire Community. The role involves providing an efficient service to the Trust and the Bereaved by assisting with scrutinizing the circumstances and causes of death of patients who die in the Hospital and community. (This post is provided by Derbyshire Pathology, a joint venture between Chesterfield Royal Hospital and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton)
The service enhances scrutiny within the death certification process and aims to improve mortality data review.
All mortuary staff contribute to the death certification process; the MEOs will serve as a conduit for bereaved families to raise concerns about care prior to death and highlight good practices.

Main duties of the job
1. Act as a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals, HM Coroner, and registration services.
2. Assist in delivering a high-quality, coordinated Medical Examiner's Office service to relatives, carers, and friends of patients who have died at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring empathetic, professional, and timely handling.
3. Facilitate the issuing of Medical Certificates of the Cause of Death by qualified clinical staff and ensure their timely transfer to the bereavement office or registration services.
4. Act as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to address concerns related to a patient's death, working with medical examiners to oversee death certification and related paperwork in the North East Derbyshire catchment area.
5. Review medical records to establish circumstances of individual patient deaths, sourcing additional details as needed for scrutiny by medical examiners.
