Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join the existing team of 17 Consultants and 3 Specialist Doctors. The role supports a wider Histopathology team that includes Biomedical Scientists, Dissection Practitioners and trainees. The post involves specialist reporting of major cancer resections, renal and liver biopsies and a broad range of complex and routine specimens.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the dissection and reporting of cases in selected specialist areas, with an emphasis on breast and skin pathology. The role may also include reporting general cases.
Scope of Cases
* General Surgery, Colorectal (including bowel cancer screening)
* Breast (including screening)
* Dermatology, Respiratory, Head and Neck
* Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Endocrine, Orthopaedics
* Diagnostic and Transplant Renal Biopsies
* Soft Tissue Tumours, Urology, Endoscopic and CT‑guided biopsies
Core Duties
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings in specialist areas of interest
* Provide frozen section service and participate in a daily duty rota with other pathologists
* Contribute to the post‑mortem rota at Queen Alexandra Hospital and perform post‑mortems for HM Coroner where authorised
* Teach and supervise trainee pathologists and participate in combined Cellular Pathology teaching meetings
* Engage in relevant EQA schemes, annual performance reviews and register with a Continuing Professional Development Scheme such as the Royal College of Pathologists
* Support the development of leadership and management skills, with opportunities to take on a clinical lead role
Qualifications
* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practice; eligibility for registration within six months of interview
* UK‑trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award; non‑UK‑trained applicants must demonstrate equivalence to the UK CCT (e.g. FRCPath)
* A medical degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent)
Experience
* Training and extensive experience in diagnostic pathology, able to practice independently
* Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
* Demonstrated ability to negotiate, innovate and prioritise clinical need
* Experience with audit, research or publications desirable
* Strong communication skills, written and oral
