Job Description
The UTAC Leyland site comprises three main test departments: Structures, Interiors and Electric Drive Unit (EDU). Each department has a range of laboratories and test rigs which are used to test and evaluate the environmental performance, strength and durability of whole vehicles, electric drivetrains, sub-systems, and components for a wide range of automotive manufacturers and their suppliers. The Fabrication and Manufacturing department supports the test departments (and other support departments) with the manufacture of test fixtures, components and rig parts.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, and working alongside another technician machinist, the position requires someone who is flexible and skilled in the use of various manual machine tools to manufacture one-off and small batch components from design drawings provided by the test departments, as well as assisting the test departments with rig assembly, fitting and test support as required.
The technician machinist must be competent at reading and reviewing engineering drawings supplied by the test departments, and be able to provide time estimates for work, as well as providing any expertise/advice as necessary with regard to machining process and tolerances etc.
It is expected that all work is completed within agreed times and is of the highest quality, whist maintaining Health & Safety standards at all times
Role & Responsibilities
1. Liaise and work with engineering staff to manufacture parts as required to support the Test Departments using the various manual machines within the shop:Milling machineJig borerCentre latheCapstan latheSurface and tool grinders
2. Work flexibly to provide technician support to the test departments as required
3. Ensure all Health & Safety and quality procedures are adhered to
4. Ordering of stock
5. Develop initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency
6. Day to day housekeeping and maintenance of the Machine Shop
7. Provides basic level of facility breakdown diagnostics and resolution
8. Act in accordance with the behaviours for UTAC staff at all times

Physical Requirements
16. The successful candidate is required to have manual handling experience (up to 25kg maximum)
17. Activities will include bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity
Advantageous Qualities:
18. Automotive experience would be an advantage
19. Experience with prototype and one-off work
20. Proficiency in Computer Aided Design and Microsoft Office applications
21. Fabrication and welding experience
22. Confident in writing risk assessments and awareness of COSHH
23. Strong awareness of Health and Safety regulations
24. Full UK driving licence
25. Forklift truck license
