Senior Principal Engineer Roads Public Transport and Greenways – Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK

Shaping Ireland's Transport Future (Roads, Public Transport and Greenways). AECOM's Surface Transportation Team in Ireland consists of a 150‑strong professional network operating across Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast, thriving on a robust pipeline of major Greenways, Active Travel and Public Transport programmes.

We are seeking a driven Senior/Principal Civil (or Infrastructure) Engineer to join our 50‑strong Highways team in Belfast. Candidates with strong industry experience and an ambition to progress to lead our national infrastructure projects are encouraged to apply. We will support you to become a certified Project Manager, providing technical, commercial and developmental experience.

Why AECOM in Ireland

* Impactful Projects: Work on some of the most significant transport programmes across Ireland, directly influencing how people move. Our current portfolio includes major road schemes (A24 Ballynahinch Bypass, N54 Tullybryan Realignment, M21 Adare Bypass Phases 1 & 2, Carlow Southern Relief Road & Multi‑Modal Corridor, N4 Mullingar to Longford) and public transport & greenway programmes such as the TII Luas Programme, the NTA BusConnects Programme and a vast Greenways (>300 km) scheme in the Republic of Ireland.
* Multidisciplinary Exposure: Hands‑on experience across the entire project lifecycle from early feasibility and statutory consent to detailed design, construction support and contract administration.
* Structured Career Progression: Mentorship, formal project‑management training through AECOM University, and exposure to client account and commercial management to broaden your skillset.
* Flexibility & Culture: Hybrid working options, Freedom to Grow policy, and a young, dynamic team that values behaviours and drive over specific skillsets.

Your Role & Responsibilities

* Deliver and coordinate design packages on complex infrastructure programmes.
* Lead technical design teams across a range of projects from concept to construction, including major highways (DMRB UK & Ireland standards), bus infrastructure (LTN 1/24 NTA standards), and greenway/active travel projects (Cycling by Design/TII DMRB).
* Produce high‑quality deliverables and services that meet client expectations within time and budget constraints.
* Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, challenging inputs from other disciplines (e.g. drainage, environmental).
* Engage directly with clients, local authorities and stakeholders, guiding them through technical challenges and statutory approval processes (Northern Ireland Roads Order, Republic of Ireland Planning Permission, Environmental Impact Assessment).
* Mentor junior engineers and apprentices, contributing to AECOM's culture of growth and continuous learning.
* Provide commercial input to expand our project portfolio and support work‑winning activities.

What we offer

* Flexible hybrid working.
* A structured and transparent career model to plan progression with confidence.
* Merit‑led reward programme recognising individual and team contributions.
* Career development opportunities via AECOM University and our Technical Excellence programme.
* A range of core and personalised benefits tailored to your lifestyle and well‑being.
* Social value opportunities allowing you to volunteer and support the communities your projects benefit.
* Sports and Social Club with regular events across the team.
* Opportunities to become an accredited NEC Project Manager or Supervisor through external training.

Qualifications

* Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status, or strong candidates progressing towards chartership.
* Significant postgraduate experience in civil engineering, highways, public transport and greenway/active travel.
* Solid understanding and experience of UK and Ireland design standards (DMRB, DMURS, LTN 1/20, LTN 1/24, NTA Cycle Design Manual).
* Experience preparing contract documentation for major transport projects (NEC, Public Works Contract) and specifications to MCHW/MCRW.
* Experience with statutory planning and design approvals, including environmental impact assessments.
* Ability to manage and lead teams of varying sizes and capabilities.
* Commercial management experience for tasks and/or projects.
