Do you have experience of working with people with learning disabilities? Do you want to work for a charity that aims to support them to be heard?
We are looking for a Local Citizens Panel Development Worker (16 hours per week) to join our team in the Scottish Borders. The salary is £23,569 – £25,825 pro-rata and we offer generous benefits.
Who we are
We are a charity based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, established in 1991. A small, friendly team, we take pride in promoting equality and change in health and social care.
Our membership includes service providers, people with lived experience of health and social care, and unpaid carers. We are committed to supporting their voice to help improve services and outcomes for people with health and social care needs.
We value and respect our employees and those we work with and are dedicated to working in partnership with others.
We also provide free training to people who work or volunteer in health and social care, and unpaid carers.
Who we are looking for
You will have experience of working with people with learning disabilities and their carers. Ideally, you will also have worked closely with learning disability service staff and decision makers. We would prefer you to have group facilitation skills and be enthusiastic about supporting people with learning disabilities.
You’ll be a dedicated team player, yet able to work on your own initiative. You’ll have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively. It would be useful if you can produce documents in accessible formats, particularly Easy Read. You will have excellent organisational abilities. You’ll be proficient in using Microsoft Office and have experience of evaluation and monitoring, as well as report writing.
What you will be doing
You will be responsible for facilitating, supporting and promoting five Local Citizens Panels (LCPs), representing the interests of people with a learning disability and unpaid carers in five localities. Each Panel meets four times a year.
You’ll support LCP members to be heard in the development and delivery of local services. You will do this by helping make meetings accessible and by ensuring each LCP is able to play a full and meaningful role within the Learning Disability Service governance structure in the Borders. You will do this by providing members with the support and information they need to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
You will arrange guest speakers to attend meetings, take notes and co-produce promotional materials. Admin support is available.
You will also ensure that LCPs are represented at appropriate events and that issues coming from the members are fed back to the appropriate decision makers, following up with them if required.
You will develop effective working relationships with partner organisations, the Learning Disability Service and local providers.
There will be some travel throughout the Borders, so you will need access to public transport or a car. You may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
You will need a current PVG scheme membership (children & adults) for this post, but if you don’t have one, we can arrange and fund this.
What you will get
We offer a flexible working policy to support the work/life balance of our employees and enable some home working, where possible.
The salary for the role is £23,569 (pro rata) with travel expenses. You will get 6 weeks’ annual leave, increasing after five years, as well as public holidays. There’s a generous pension contribution (8%) and enhanced sickness pay.
There will be opportunities for your own learning and development, and coaching/mentoring will be available. The post is for a fixed term of 18 months, but this may be extended if additional funding is sourced.
