Academic Manager – St. Andrew’s College Language Schools

Location: Glasgow, Paisley, Edinburgh, Ayr, Stirling, London, Chatham (Kent), Canterbury, Bognor Regis (West Sussex), Brighton, Colchester, Gloucester, Keele and Dublin.

Total Salary: £743.03 – £847.25 per week (including holiday pay). Accommodation included. Duration: Summer 2026. Reports to: St. Andrew’s College Language Schools’ Senior Management Team. Work Hours: 42‑hour week (usually 5/6 days, 6‑day campuses may include Saturday).


Essential Requirements

* Educated to degree level (Level 6) or higher
* Cambridge CELTA/Trinity CERT TESOL, or a QTS award if it is primary level, or secondary level English or Foreign Languages.
* At least 3 years’ full‑time EFL experience.
* Awareness of the responsibilities of working with students under the age of 18.
* Computer literate and able to handle large amounts of data.
* Able to adapt quickly to change.


Desirable Requirements

* Cambridge DELTA or Trinity College London, Dip TESOL or PGCE TEFL/TESOL or a taught postgraduate course (MA equivalent) in TEFL/TESOL, including at least 6 hours of supervised teaching practice (TEFLQ Status).
* Excellent communication skills, written and spoken.
* Over three years’ full‑time EFL experience.
* Proven competence in academic leadership, people management, and administration.
* Smart personal appearance.


Job Overview

The Academic Manager is responsible for the implementation and administration of all aspects of the academic programme, including the management of the teaching team and their performance. This is a management position with a demanding workload.


The Role Of An Academic Manager Incorporates The Following

* Ensuring the safety and welfare of all students at all times.
* Collaborating with the on‑campus management team to deliver a high‑quality, collegiate programme, integrating lessons and activities.
* Overall management of the academic programme and teaching team, ensuring the highest standard possible.


Welfare, Safeguarding and Health and Safety

* Read and are fully familiar with the staff handbook and all welfare, safeguarding and health & safety policies.
* Inducted to at least level 2 safeguarding.
* Implement and monitor all health & safety policies and the Emergency Action Plan, First Aid and Fire Safety regulations.
* Maintain records of welfare, safeguarding and safety problems, solutions and outcomes in accordance with guidelines.


The Student Experience & Digital Management

* Use Google Drive to record, organise and manage the academic programme, including classing of students, allocation of classes and classrooms, creation of class lists, registers and communication with teachers and Senior Management Team.
* Use the Master Spreadsheet to record and organise student data and information, and to plan and process intakes.


Placement Tests

* Coordinate with Centre Manager regarding location, format and logistics.
* Provide clear guidance to staff on delivering placement tests.
* Organise professional monitoring, efficient marking and temporary teaching classes during marking periods.
* Collaborate with Group leaders to clarify the testing process and how results inform class selection.


Classing Students

* Create class lists and registers of no more than 18 students, considering age, level, mix and continuity.
* Ensure students know their class placement promptly.
* Liaise with Group leaders to approve class lists and maintain accurate daily records.
* Monitor online attendance and lesson logs, and update teaching signage.


Student Certificates

* Organise, advertise and lead graduation ceremonies.
* Verify names before printing, distribute certificates, and return students’ books.


Student Records

* Complete documentation and maintain student records.
* Manage risk assessment forms for out‑of‑class lessons.


Management of Teaching & Learning Team

* Teach when necessary (absence, sickness, low student numbers).
* Represent the college positively in all client, staff and host centre interactions.


Inductions

* Lead Academic Staff Induction Day, usually one or two days before student arrival, fully inducting new staff.


Meetings and Working Environment

* Run staff meetings, daily updates, weekly team feedback and individual appraisals.
* Facilitate weekly Teacher Development workshops.
* Maintain a functional teacher room/office environment and organised resources.
* Ensure inclusion, safety, and positive working atmosphere for staff.


Maintaining Staff Records

* Keep accurate staff records per company guidelines.
* Create accurate rotas/timetables and log weekly staff hours.
* Maintain confidential personnel files and summaries of problems and solutions.


Teachers’ Duties and Responsibilities

* Manage academic team and implement academic programme per college guidelines.
* Maintain high teaching standards and support teachers in lesson planning.
* Lead and manage positions of senior teacher and junior teachers, ensuring compliance.
* Foster safe, positive atmosphere for students and colleagues.
* Show initiative, set exemplary behaviour and oversee corridor safety.
* Integrate new students and encourage continuous enrolment.
* Encourage innovative teaching approaches and utilise classroom resources.
* Share experience and knowledge with colleagues, promote independent learning strategies, and ensure students record achievements.
* Follow board work guidelines.


Disclosure Checks

* Provide PVG from Disclosure Scotland / Enhanced DBS from the Disclosure and Barring Service within three months of start date.
* Include police check from any country of employment abroad exceeding three months.
* Payable by employee (£18‑£70); employer may deduct funds.
* Disclosure process typically takes 14 days (up to 18 weeks).
* Pending disclosure at commencement is acceptable under policy.
