East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant General Surgeon with interest in Colorectal Surgery.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is a very busy, high volume centre providing all aspect of Subspecialist Colorectal, HPB and general surgical treatment with state of the art facilities. The successful applicant will join the general surgery team

The Trust has an established a colorectal robotic surgery service and hosts the Lancashire Women’s & Newborn Endometriosis Centre led by the Gynaecologists. We are looking to further enhance our services in pelvic floor disease, as well as our minimally invasive IBD service with the gastroenterology service. Skills in transanal surgery and complex abdominal wall reconstructions will also be looked upon favourably.

This creates an exciting time for prospective candidates to be part of an expanding surgical service. A higher degree and ongoing research interests are desirable.


Main duties of the job

The appointee should have a broad training in general surgery with competency in both elective and emergency general surgery. The appointee will be expected to participate in the General Surgical on-call rota which is 1:16.

The applicant should be keen, hardworking and have willingness to work flexibly as a team member. This is especially important as the department is currently looking to deliver a transformed model of working in keeping with national 7 day standards and clinical excellence. Please note the job plan advertised is an example.

Any applicant should have entry on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of being placed on the Register. The post is based across our two main sites the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. It also involves clinics at peripheral sites in the East Lancashire region.

Minimum Requirements:

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with license to practice

Entry on specialist register via: -

* CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
* CESR or European Community Rights
* FRCS or equivalent

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible along with General Surgery colleagues for the provision of outpatient and inpatient services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust.
2. Aim to deliver high quality care with the help of the existing surgical team.
3. Be a team player and flexible with your approach.
4. Be involved in complex clinical, patient management problems and multi-disciplinary planning treatment.
5. On appointment the candidate will have a prescribed number of theatre sessions to deliver during the financial year and an associated level of activity.
6. Share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate.
7. Ensure all dictation of clinical letters within 24 hours (mandatory).
8. Observe and comply with clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures (including local and national employment and personnel policies) agreed with employees and in particular, the post holder will be responsible for updating policies and guidelines for the General Surgery service along with colleagues, which should be reviewed annually.
9. Provide support to the complaints process (this may include attending complaint meetings with patients, families and their relatives).
10. Be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues.
11. Support the Trainee’s and Trust Doctors in the daily duties and on-going learning.


Person specification


Attainments


Essential criteria

* Full GMC registration
* Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
* Appropriate higher surgical qualifications (e.g FRCS)


Desirable criteria

* Postgraduate thesis/Higher Degree (e.g. MD/Ph.D)


Relevent Clinical Experience


Essential criteria

* Clinical training and experience in colorectal surgery equivalent to that required for UK CCST.
* Statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that related to colorectal surgery
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective.
* Sufficient experience to join the general surgery consultant on call rota.


Desirable criteria

* Specialist colorectal fellowship (or equivalent documented experience).
* A Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with any other subspecialist areas of interest (e.g. paediatrics, IBD, or pelvic floor) will also be considered for this post.


Management Experience


Essential criteria

* Good communication skills, especially with patients, relatives, GPs, colleagues, nursing staff and management.
* Ability to organise and manage outpatient and operative priorities


Desirable criteria

* Previous experience of a management or leadership role.
* Ability to contribute to multi-disciplinary team working, medical directorate and working parties as appropriate
* Ability to advise on efficiency and smooth running of specialist service


Research


Essential criteria

* Ability to teach clinical skills, teach and lecture on speciality
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems


Desirable criteria

* Ability to supervise postgraduate research
* Previous experience of Clinical Trials
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals
* Presentations at international, national and regional level


Audit


Essential criteria

* Evidence of: •morbidity/mortality audit •unit and specific audit •understanding of risk assessment


Desirable criteria

* Experience of leadership or management in audit or quality improvement


Teaching


Essential criteria

* Evidence of - Experience of leadership or management in audit or quality improvement
* Evidence of - operative teaching to ST and CST trainees or equivalent


Desirable criteria

* Management/involvement in local or regional teaching programmes
