Job Summary
We are seeking a highly competent and enthusiastic individual to join our busy and friendly team as a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist in Histology at the Royal United Hospital Bath. The role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail across all areas of the Histology laboratory, including tissue transfer, embedding, microtomy, special stains, immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridisation (ISH), and digital pathology.
The post holder will also contribute to essential housekeeping tasks, equipment management and maintenance, and quality assurance processes. Applicants should demonstrate strong communication skills, effective teamwork and excellent time‑management and organisational abilities. The closing date is 10 June 2026.
Responsibilities
* Perform tissue transfer, embedding, microtomy, and processing of histology specimens.
* Carry out special stains, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridisation (ISH) as required.
* Prepare digital pathology images and support the department’s digital workflow.
* Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, manage inventory and ensure timely replacement of consumables.
* Execute housekeeping tasks, including clean‑up of lab surfaces, waste management and safety compliance.
* Participate in quality assurance programmes and adhere to departmental health & safety regulations.
* Support medical laboratory assistants (MLAs) and work collaboratively to deliver a flexible service.
Qualifications
* Current HCPC registration and completion of the HCPC registration portfolio (or actively working to obtain it).
* Biomedical Science degree or equivalent accredited qualification.
* Recent practical experience in all aspects of routine histology.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Salary
£32,073 to £39,043 per annum, pro‑rata.
