Assistant Professor (Research & Education) – Sport Psychology

Full‑time, fixed‑term contract for 12 months, ending December 2026. Closing date: 2 Nov 2025. Salary range £47,389 – £56,535, with progression to £63,606.
Role Summary
Contribute to research, teaching and administration in Sport Psychology and Sport Mental Health at a world‑leading department. Deliver modules, supervise PhD and undergraduate students and engage in student recruitment and outreach.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct research in Sport Psychology and Sport Mental Health, applying psychological theories to improve mental health and well‑being in sport and exercise contexts.
* Design, implement and evaluate mental health interventions with athletes; provide consultancy and knowledge exchange with sport organisations.
* Supervise PhD and undergraduate students in Sport Psychology and Mental Health.
* Lead a Sport Psychology module and contribute to other modules related to Sport Psychology and Research Methods.
* Participate in student recruitment activities and contribute to initiatives that enhance the student experience across the School.
* Demonstrate excellent academic citizenship, fostering respectful, collaborative and supportive relationships with staff and students.
Research Activities
* Supervise and mentor PhD students in Sport Psychology and Mental Health.
* Provide expert advice to staff and students within the discipline.
* Engage in research‑related enabling activities and develop new intellectual understanding.
Teaching Duties
* Deliver and assess Sport Psychology modules at various levels, including final‑year dissertation.
* Plan and review teaching approaches in line with programme objectives.
* Design contemporary, inclusive, and engaging curriculum content for sport psychology and sport mental health.
* Support knowledge transfer and enterprise that enhances student experience and employability.
* Engage in core recruitment activities (Open Days, offers, talks, practical demonstrations).
Management & Administration
* Contribute to research and teaching administration at School, college and university level.
* Lead and manage teaching and research processes.
* Develop external relationships with key stakeholders in education, sport and related sectors.
* Provide personal development advice to colleagues and students.
* Support knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement.
* Promote equality and diversity within the School.
Academic Citizenship
* Take ownership of School challenges and collaborate on solutions.
* Engage in strategic initiatives and administrative activities such as panel work.

Person Specification – Essential
* Doctoral qualification in Sport and Exercise Science or Sport Psychology.
* Experience conducting and managing own research in sport psychology or sport mental health.
* Excellent academic writing skills for publication in high‑impact journals.
* Experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate learning in sport psychology, managing modules.
* Experience supervising masters and doctoral level projects in sport, exercise or health psychology.
* Experience delivering transfer, enterprise or similar activities enhancing student experience or employability.
* Excellent organisation and time‑management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable
* Evidence of funded research projects.
* Established research partnerships with external organisations.
* Ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
* Links to professional organisations related to physical education, sport, physical activity or mental health.
* Experience of applied practice such as sport psychology consultation.
