Job Summary

37.5 hours per week. Are you passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities and committed to improving their quality of life? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Community Learning Disabilities Nurse to join Barnsley Adult Community Learning Disabilities Health Service as part of a thriving multi‑disciplinary health team.

Job Responsibilities

* Carry responsibility for a defined caseload, including service users of all levels of ability.
* Serve as an effective member of the multi‑disciplinary team and promote a consistent multi‑agency approach.
* Manage an individual caseload by prioritising need and respond to patient crisis in a timely manner.
* Support junior nursing staff in the implementation of their duties and provide clinical supervision and professional advice.
* Organise and contribute to patient reviews and contribute towards care management processes where appropriate.
* Support health improvement initiatives and maintain professional registration.
* Ensure compliance with existing and relevant local district policies and report untoward occurrences to the Lead Nurse/Operational Team Manager and record on Datix.
* Maintain staff morale and provide junior staff emotional and professional support.
* Promote positive leadership through excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Advise the Lead Nurse/Operational Team Manager on shortcomings of the nursing service and suggest appropriate actions.
* Liaise with specialist clinics in relation to medical and patient nurse support where appropriate.

* Management: Promote positive leadership, liaise with multi‑agency teams, manage resources and provide audit information.
* Professional: Keep abreast of changes in the nursing profession, ensure regular clinical supervision, support evidence‑based client care and maintain policy for safe drug usage.
* Personnel: Maintain staff morale and provide supportive supervision.


Experience / Person Specification

* Essential Experience: Substantial post‑qualifying experience in the care of people with a learning disability and a proven track record of working as a member of a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Desirable Experience: Managing care, service development, working with families and carers, and care management.
* Essential Personal Attributes: Self‑motivated, good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, ability to work under pressure, current driving licence and access to a car during the working day.
* Essential Physical Attributes: Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post, satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years.
* Essential Qualifications: RNLD and a teaching qualification.
* Desirable Qualifications: Evidence of additional academic study at Diploma/Degree level.
* Essential Special Knowledge / Skills: Specialist knowledge across a range of areas relevant to practice, current philosophy underpinning learning disability community care provision, planning and organising skills, health‑promoting facilitation, and teaching practice.
* Desirable Special Knowledge / Skills: Knowledge and understanding of cultural and diversity issues, mental health, challenging behaviour, and complex health needs.
* Essential Training: Professional knowledge relevant to practice acquired by degree, diploma, specialist training and short courses.
* Desirable Training: Further training in areas relevant to practice (e.g., autism, challenging behaviour, long‑term conditions).
