About Sumus
At Sumus, we’re building SENSE V3 — the next-generation product intelligence platform that combines AI, toxicology, and sustainability insights to help consumers instantly understand what’s in the products they use.
Think Yuka meets Google Maps meets Reddit — a mobile-first experience where users scan, discover, and rate products based on ingredient safety, environmental impact, and transparency — all powered by our proprietary scoring engine.
Our mission is simple: empower the conscious consumer. And we’re looking for a world-class Toxicologist to help us get there.
The Role: What We’re Looking For
We are seeking an experienced Toxicologist with deep expertise in cosmetics, skincare, and personal care ingredients to help us build and validate the methodology that powers our scoring engine.
You will work closely with our CEO, developers, and advisory team to:
• Design and refine ingredient scoring logic based on toxicological, regulatory, and allergenicity data
• Evaluate safety thresholds, known irritants, hormone disruptors, and cumulative risk factors
• Cross-reference chemical substances with established regulatory frameworks (e.g. ECHA, INCI, EU CMRs, Prop 65, etc.)
• Support the team with building a transparent methodology that is both science-based and easily understandable to the public
• Advise on flagging high-risk ingredients, allergens, and banned substances in real-time product scans
• Help us translate complex toxicological data into digestible consumer-facing scores
• Collaborate with our AI team to improve ingredient matching, classification, and label decoding models
Requirements
Must-Have:
• Minimum 3-5 years experience in toxicology or related safety science, preferably in cosmetics, personal care, or beauty products
• Strong understanding of international ingredient regulations (EU, UK, US)
• Knowledge of cosmetic formulation, ingredient databases, and material safety dossiers
• Degree in Toxicology, Cosmetic Science, Pharmacology, or similar
• Familiarity with consumer risk assessment, hazard classifications, and EWG/Yuka-style platforms
• Excellent communication skills — ability to explain technical issues to non-scientific audiences
• Fluent in English
Bonus:
• Worked with consumer product startups or apps
• Experience with data modelling, AI/ML integration, or sustainability scoring
• Experience with label analysis software or chemical databases (e.g., PubChem, CosIng, CIR)
Terms of Engagement
This is a consultancy role starting immediately, with an initial part-time commitment of 8–13 hours per week.
Compensation Structure:
• Monthly retainer during the first MVP development phase
• Equity in Sumus, based on deliverables and milestone completion
• Additional deferred payment to be unlocked post-Seed funding round (targeted Q4 2025)
This role offers a rare opportunity to shape the scientific and ethical foundation of a tech platform aiming to influence the future of product transparency and consumer health.
Please send your CV and a short message outlining:
• Why this role excites you
• Any relevant experience with ingredient risk scoring, regulatory safety, or consumer apps
• Your availability to begin (ASAP preferred)
We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. First interviews will be conducted via video call with our Founder and CTO.
