About the role
Design Consulting is seeking an experienced Vehicle Test Engineer to support vehicle‑level validation activities focused on comfort systems and lighting functions. The successful candidate will work on‑site in Crewe with the client engineering team to plan, execute and report tests that verify component and system performance, functional integration and user experience.
Key responsibilities
* Plan and execute vehicle tests for comfort-related components (seats, HVAC, interior trim, actuators, HMI) and lighting systems (interior lighting, exterior lamps, adaptive headlights, DRLs, dimming/scene control).
* Define test plans, procedures and acceptance criteria according to requirements and program milestones.
* Configure and operate vehicle instrumentation and data acquisition (CAN/LIN, sensors, oscilloscopes, loggers).
* Perform functional, diagnostic and regression testing; capture and analyse performance data; identify root causes and propose corrective actions.
* Carry out vehicle-level diagnosis to identify electrical, communication and functional faults; produce clear fault reports and support fault-tracing activities.
* Validate ECU interactions, signal integrity and electrical interfaces for comfort and lighting sub-systems.
* Support calibration activities: apply and verify calibration procedures for comfort and lighting systems, work with calibration files and process to tune system behaviour.
* Produce clear, timely test reports, defect records and technical summaries for engineering and program management.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams (systems, software, electrical, HMI, NVH) to resolve issues and verify fixes.
* Ensure compliance with relevant safety and industry standards during test activities.
* Support vehicle build checks, integration activities and pre-delivery inspections as required.
Required qualifications
* Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive Engineering or related discipline.
* 3+ years’ experience in vehicle testing or validation, with demonstrable work on comfort and/or lighting systems.
* Proven experience in vehicle diagnosis and fault-tracing at system and network level.
* Practical knowledge of Vector tools (e.g., CANoe/CANalyzer or equivalent) for bus analysis and testing.
* Familiarity with calibration procedures for vehicle systems and experience working with calibration workflows.
* Strong practical skills with vehicle electrical systems, CAN/LIN networks and test instrumentation.
* Proven ability to write test plans/procedures and deliver professional test reports.
* Fluent English (verbal and written) is required; Italian language skills are desirable.
* Valid driver’s license and willingness to work on-site in Crewe and travel to client locations as required.
Desirable
* Experience with lighting control modules, LED systems, HMI/UX evaluation, HVAC calibration.
* Experience with calibration tools.
* Familiarity with vehicle software update processes, HIL or SIL test methods.
* Knowledge of automotive standards (ISO, SAE) and EMC considerations.
