Start Thurrock is transforming arts and culture in Thurrock and we’re looking for an inspiring Independent Chair to help lead its next exciting chapter. Backed by £1M from Arts Council England, Start Thurrock empowers local residents to shape, create and experience outstanding arts and cultural activities in the places they live. As part of the national Creative People and Places programme, we support communities to become makers, performers, producers and leaders, building broader and deeper cultural engagement across Thurrock. As Independent Chair, you’ll guide the Start Thurrock Core Consortium (including Thurrock Council, Royal Opera & Ballet, Thurrock CVS, Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions CIC and Tilbury on the Thames Trust) through the programme’s next phase, ensuring strong governance and strategic clarity from 2026–2029. This is a unique role for a senior leader who: Believes passionately in the power of art and culture to improve lives Can confidently work across sectors and with diverse partners Excels in facilitation, collaboration and strategic oversight Wants to make a genuine, resident-led impact We welcome and actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. This is not a trustee role and carries no Companies House or Charity Commission accountability. The role is voluntary, with expenses covered. If you’re ready to help shape a more creative, community-led future for Thurrock, we’d love to hear from you.
