Clinical Charge Nurse

Gresham 2 is a 20 bedded male acute ward located on historic Bethlem Royal Hospital site. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Clinical Charge Nurse to join our well-established team within Croydon Acute Care Service.

The Clinical Charge Nurses role is suitable for Registered Mental Nurses who have successfully completed preceptorship, gained relevant post‑qualification experience and have registered as an approved NMC Practice Assessor.

As the post holder you will work with the ward team and manager to provide high‑quality nursing care and leadership. You will be a highly skilled, well‑motivated individual with considerable experience of working in a dynamic acute mental health service.

You will be responsible for implementing and monitoring all policies and ensuring that the ward functions in line with the Trust and the wards philosophy of providing respectful, compassionate care at the highest quality. You will also ensure that supervision and appraisal systems are thoroughly implemented and that the care provided meets the highest possible standard in line with the services clinical governance framework.


Main duties of the job

Working as part of an MDT, you will provide excellent communication and teamwork. You will lead by example and serve as a role model for the nursing team, supporting junior staff and students in their professional development through clinical leadership and knowledge sharing.

You will work closely with the ward manager to maintain the highest standard of care and safe staffing. You will contribute to all aspects of service development and improvement. In return, the service will provide you with high levels of supervision and support, and personal development plans to help you grow in this role.

You will develop confidence in assessing risk formally and informally, balancing this with acting in the least restrictive way to foster a safe yet therapeutic service.

It is essential that you understand the challenges nurses face when caring for individuals with mental health difficulties and demonstrate resilience and empathy. A strong commitment and passion for being part of an excellent service are highly valued.

You will participate in day‑to‑day patient care and undertake Duty Senior Nurse duties following completion of the relevant training.

Qualifications

* Registered Mental Health Nurse


Experience

* Research‑based/reflective practice experience, including the use of supervision to reflect on skills, attitude and knowledge and to develop these using evidence‑based practice.
* Significant relevant clinical experience.
* Knowledge of relevant professional and clinical legislation.
* Experience assessing physical health needs in a mental health setting.
* Knowledge of clinical governance and audit.
* Experience engaging with/supporting clinical research projects.
* Experience supporting practice development, e.g. quality improvement initiatives.


Skills and Abilities

* Provides quality care that is responsive to service users’ needs and demonstrates an inclusive approach.
* Teaching ability – ability to communicate and present concepts and information to a group effectively.
* Resilient – able to cope with difficult interpersonal situations.
* Evidence of leadership within the current workplace (e.g. involvement/leading QI projects).
* Problem solving – ability to identify problems, review options and take appropriate action with minimal supervision.
* Belief that people who use our services, their carers and our staff should be treated with compassion, respect and dignity.
* Ensures that all services and staff understand and support our commitment.


Minimum of 2 years of working as an RMN

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

£44,485 to £52,521 a year (inclusive of HCAS)
