Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Services)

An established MEP and Sustainability Consultancy based in Bolton is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team. The role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of UK and international projects, including high-end residential, commercial, retail, healthcare and specialist developments, with a strong focus on sustainable and innovative building design.
This is a senior‑level position suited to an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys leading projects, mentoring engineers and contributing to technically challenging and environmentally responsible schemes.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and deliver detailed mechanical building services designs from concept through to construction.
* Prepare and coordinate 2D and 3D models using AutoCAD and Revit, working to BIM Level 2 standards and relevant British Standards.
* Review and check technical designs produced by the team, ensuring quality, compliance and buildability.
* Mentor and support junior engineers, providing technical guidance and design leadership.
* Coordinate designs with mechanical, public health and structural engineers to ensure fully integrated MEP solutions.
* Attend design team, client and contractor meetings, responding to technical queries and RFIs.
* Undertake site visits to review installation quality and ensure compliance with design intent.
* Contribute to sustainable design solutions, supporting low‑carbon, energy‑efficient and net‑zero objectives.
What we’re looking for
* Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
* Significant experience working within a UK‑based building services consultancy in a senior mechanical design role.
* Strong background in detailed mechanical design for sectors such as residential, commercial, healthcare, hospitality or leisure.
* Proven experience using Revit and AutoCAD in a BIM environment.
* Sound knowledge of current British Standards, Building Regulations and PAS 1192 / ISO 19650 frameworks.
* Good understanding of sustainability standards such as BREEAM, energy efficiency and net zero carbon design.
* Experience managing projects and reviewing the work of others.
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site visits (UK and overseas). A valid passport is required for international travel.
