As the VP of Engineering, you will take ownership of all technical decision-making, crafting solutions that shape this consumer app's global presence. This role is central to steering the technical vision, articulating and championing these decisions among engineers and business leaders alike. With a focus on mentorship, you will elevate the engineering teams across the UK and US, aligning technological advancements with strategic business goals.
Technology Leadership
In your role, you will be working to ensure that the current platform, applications, team and processes are fit for purpose, especially in the context of ambitious commercial goals.
You will:
• Own the technical direction and architectural integrity of this consumer app, ensuring it scales globally while maintaining a world-class developer experience.
• Drive the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and practices that align with business and product objectives.
• Be accountable for engineering vision and execution across global platforms, working closely alongside the VP of Engineering US to ensure a consistent, connected, secure and scalable engineering platform able to deliver against the needs of client expectations.
• Be accountable for the technical design of systems and services and the appropriate documentation.
• Ensure that security, accessibility, testing and good development practices are baked into how the engineering teams develop; where you don’t have the expertise yourself, you understand the value of those practices and how to learn from experts.
• Be an active member of the UK Leadership Team, working with your peers across the business to lead the company and deliver critical business outcomes.
• Work with product, delivery, design and other disciplines to improve overall processes.
• Grow and maintain a high-velocity Engineering process and a high-performing team that can deliver.
Technical Strategy
• Work with the CTO, your peers and team to help build the technical strategy and execute it.
• Be responsible for the standards and processes for writing high quality code.
• Develop a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities as a business, as it expands in the US and UK and be proactive in identifying strategic responses.
Delivery, Operations and Compliance
• Accountable for delivery and continued success of global platforms.
• Review and advise on best practice development environments, tools and technology that support company and vision.
• Communicate your suggestions and exert influence through strong written communication, ensuring clarity and impact in all technical documentation and correspondence.
• Oversee supplier contracts, selection, renewals and negotiations, ensuring value for money.
• Ensure the business meets it’s contractual commitments on support, in hours and out of hours.
• Liaise with InfoSec and other teams to ensure data is secure.
Leadership of a High-Performing Engineering Team
• Lead by influence, fostering collaboration across UK and US teams to leverage insights and synchronise technological platforms.
• Mentor and uplift engineering talent, promoting a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
• Be responsible for influencing a high-performing Engineering culture where teams are encouraged to be curious and execute high quality code at pace with decisiveness.
• Create an environment for growth, candour, and healthy challenge to drive Engineering excellence.
• Ensure that teams are connected to the cause and feel ownership of the long-term ambitions of key products and understanding of the end user.
• Shape the engineering environment and tooling to accelerate productivity and facilitate the creation of outstanding software solutions.
• Team mentorship including; hands on technical reviews, up skilling, coaching, and suggested improvements to fill skills gaps and create culture add in order to enhance the current engineering environments and teams.
• Foster a strong remote-working culture and work to continually improve collaboration and communication.
• Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion and ensure your team has the same commitment.
Key Requirements
Technical Skills
• Strong architectural and technical expertise, with the ability to impart knowledge effectively.
• Demonstrated experience in building scalable and secure systems.
• Proven leadership in setting and executing a technology strategy that drives significant business impact.
• Experience in team leadership, mentoring of technical staff.
• Experience developing consumer-facing mobile products.
• Solid understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD), Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).
• Knowledge of distributed systems, messaging, and eventually consistent architectures.
• Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Experience in UNIX-like environments (preferably not exclusively in .NET).

• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to motivate teams and drive high performance.
• Skilled coach and mentor, particularly for senior and principal engineers aiming for career advancement.
• A bias towards action, capable of building an outcome-driven, commercially aware technology group.
• Adept at communicating with non-technical stakeholders at all levels.
Education / Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent career experience.
