Managing Technical Consultant - Marine Ecology - Fish/Shellfish (Mid‑Senior Level)
ERM’s Marine Ecology team seeks an experienced consultant to deliver marine fish and shellfish elements of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). The role sits within the Nature and Biodiversity group of the Capital Project Delivery line and works across a range of sectors including offshore wind, marine aggregates, carbon capture storage (CCS), oil and gas decommissioning, wave and tidal energy, subsea cables, coastal/marine engineering, and ports and harbours development.
As part of a dynamic, collaborative environment you will produce high‑standard reports such as desk studies, scoping documents, Preliminary Environmental Information Reports (PEIRs), EIA chapters and specialist advice to UK and overseas operators, governments and regulators. Your contributions will focus on, but are not limited to, fish and shellfish ecology and you will support proposal writing, project management and eventual project leadership.
Essential Qualifications
* BSc or MSc in a relevant technical subject
* Knowledge and experience across oil & gas decommissioning, CCS, renewables (incl. hydrogen) and aggregates
* Strong scientific understanding and track record in fish & shellfish ecology and associated impact assessments
* Good knowledge of the UK's marine biodiversity and the EUNIS marine habitat classification system
* Understanding of environmental survey design and marine biological survey data, including remote sensing, ground‑truthing techniques and data limitations
* Extensive experience with standard MS Office software
* Awareness of relevant European and domestic legislation (Marine and Coastal Access Act, Habitats Regulations, EIA Regulations)
* An enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn as part of a team and under own supervision
Desirable Qualifications
* 5+ years professional experience in marine consultancy or a technical marine field
* Comfortable using AI for research and workflow management
* Project management experience, including delivering tasks on agreed budgets and timeframes
* Experience with GIS packages (preferably ESRI™ ArcGIS or QGIS) to manipulate, interrogate and interpret spatial datasets
* Public speaking experience
* Specialist knowledge of a specific marine sector and its potential impacts on the marine environment
* Understanding of Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRAs) and Marine Conservation Zone Risk Assessments (MCZ)
* Field‑work experience in sampling, data collection and collation for offshore and near‑shore environmental surveys
