Job Description – Science Technician Post: Science Technician Contract:Permanent, Part-Time, TTO plus 3 weeks Grade/Scale: Grade F, Points 7-10 Working Hours: 35 hours per week: 8.15am – 3.45pm (30 minutes unpaid lunch daily) Term Time Only plus 15 days (41 weeks) Core Purpose: The Science Technician role exists to support the Science Department in the teaching and learning of the students, by timely preparation of resources, equipment and materials required by the teaching staff for use in practical demonstrations, maintaining chemicals and equipment and adhering to and promoting the guidance found in the Cleapss guidance and COSHH regulations. Specific Post Holder Responsibilities: Coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities of the science department. Working closely with the Science department, including to:. Liaise closely with teaching staff and other school staff to ensure safe practices are observed at all time.. Preparing, constructing and modifying apparatus, assisting practical work, preparing materials, solutions etc and assisting in the development of apparatus and equipment for use in practical lessons.. Ensure the effective preparation for and clearance of equipment after lessons, including cleaning and checking of equipment, glassware and apparatus etc.. Assist teaching staff during practical classes including demonstration of skills, techniques and equipment, provision of advice etc at an appropriate level.. Assist teaching staff in preparatory work for examinations.. To contribute to design, development & maintenance of specialist resources/ long-term projects. Ensure availability of equipment including:. Be responsible for the maintenance of laboratory services and facilities, including carrying out and arranging as appropriate for the maintenance and repair apparatus, tools and equipment etc.. Ensure that preparation and storage rooms, cupboards, lockers, bench tops and other areas are in clean and tidy condition.. Ensure the maintenance of appropriate stock levels and ensure stock checks are carried out.. Ensure appropriate storekeeping systems are maintained, including receipt and issue of materials and equipment, placing and following up orders, dealing with deliveries, processing invoices and maintenance of financial records. Liaison with finance team as appropriate. To ensure the maintenance of a healthy & safe working environment to:. Provide technical advice and support on health and safety matters to teachers and students.. Keep up to date with health and safety requirements and with developments in practical science.. Be responsible for the maintenance and disposal of solutions and waste in accordance with established guidelines.. To carry out annual electrical safety checks for Science equipment capable of connection to the mains.. Organising, storing and checking the condition of chemicals and equipment.. Prepare standard solutions, purify chemicals, treat waste. Be familiar with science - specific Health and Safety requirements where relevant and plan to avoid potential hazards in the carrying out of duties.
