We are currently working in partnership with a award-winning University, who are looking to appoint a Head of Health & Safety on a Permanent Contract.
This will be a full-time position based in Southeast London, with hybrid working (1/2 days home working) and a salary of £63,655 - £71,157.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in in health and safety management within a complex organisation, preferably in higher education or a similar sector.
Duties will include (but are not limited to):
1. Develop and implement a comprehensive university-wide health and safety strategy, ensuring alignment with legal requirements, institutional goals, and best practices
2. Oversee day-to-day health and safety operations across the university, ensuring effective risk management for issues including fire safety, asbestos, and water safety
3. Lead investigations into health and safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented
4. Lead the review and update of health and safety policies and procedures to reflect legislative changes and best practices, ensuring effective communication of these policies across the university
5. Ensure all accidents, incidents, and dangerous occurrences are properly reported, including filing RIDDOR reports with HSE when necessary
6. Lead, mentor, and manage the Health and Safety team, providing clear direction and support to ensure high levels of performance
7. Manage the health and safety budget, ensuring financial resources are allocated effectively and in line with university procedures
Experience required:
8. Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field such as Health and Safety Management, Occupational Health, or Environmental Safety.
9. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
10. Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or equivalent status (desirable)
11. Demonstrable experience of implementing health and safety policies that comply with legislation and promote a culture of safety.
12. Experience managing and leading a health and safety team
Skills, knowledge and expertise required:
13. Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, including fire safety, asbestos regulations, and the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
14. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex information clearly
15. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels
