An opportunity has arisen for a trainee medical photographer to join our team for a fixed two-year period. The position is part-time, working approximately 22.5 hours per week (three days).

The medical photography service operates across three sites: Basildon Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, and Southend Hospital, where services are being re-established. The department is busy, photographing around 10,000 patients annually at each site.

Candidates should ideally have a qualification in photography and experience in the photography field. Prior work experience within a Medical Photography department is highly desirable. Experience with video work would also be beneficial, as the department aims to develop this service further.

The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, conscientious, and capable of working well both in a team and independently. Sufficient computer skills are essential, including familiarity with Photoshop, Office, and possibly some database experience. Good communication skills are crucial, as the role involves working closely with medical and support staff.

Principle duties include clinical photography across various specialties such as Plastics, Dermatology, Tissue Viability, Maxillo-facial, Burns, and Ophthalmology (Burns and Ophthalmology at Broomfield base). Initially, work will be supervised until the post holder can work independently.

There is an opportunity to undertake a graduate or postgraduate certificate in clinical photography during the second year of employment, starting January 2026.

The Medical Photography Department has recently merged, now comprising nine photographers and administrative support staff. The department has supported trainee posts in past years, with successful candidates qualifying to Band 5 either within the department or elsewhere.

The role involves working as part of a team to provide a professional, efficient, high-quality photographic and video service for diagnostic, record-keeping, research, teaching, and publication purposes, adhering to all consent, confidentiality, and legal guidelines. Supervision will be provided until proficiency is achieved for independent work.
