Grid & Primary Design Manager
This Design Manager position requires a senior-level design professional with specific experience in 33kV to 132kV substation design. Some hybrid working arrangements are available, with part of the week working from our client’s Northeast office and the rest from home.
Our client aims to appoint a Grid & Primary Design Manager to enable full delivery of their schemes and contracts. They seek an innovative, passionate, and industry-experienced professional to work on multiple projects from initial concept and feasibility through to procurement, construction, and commissioning.
We are looking for a talented professional to lead a multi-faceted design team working on critical grid and primary substation projects.
Our Client
The client is responsible for constructing, maintaining, renewing, refurbishing, and repairing electricity transmission and distribution networks, assets, and systems. This includes substations, overhead lines, underground cables, and associated plant and equipment such as switchgear and transformers.
The Role
* Manage and oversee all aspects of design (from outline to detailed) during the project lifecycle, including planning, approval, construction, commissioning, and handover.
* Design and develop 33kV to 132kV grid and primary substations.
* Approve pre-manufacturing drawings and ensure compliance with specifications.
* Sign off on protection studies and ensure systems are secure and reliable.
* Authorize design of block cable diagrams, set files, and key line diagrams.
* Collaborate with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineers, and the Design Team to ensure projects meet objectives on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
* Align business processes and systems for maximum performance and manage projects using appropriate company systems.
* Respond rapidly to change and develop creative solutions.
* Provide accurate information for projects under your control.
* Develop project designs within agreed timelines and manage designs within budgets and schedules.
* Willingness to travel and participate in site meetings as necessary.
* Manage and approve third-party design resources.
* Lead and manage a team of diverse Design Engineers.
The Person
* Possess an HNC or equivalent qualification.
* Hold a full UK driving license and be willing to travel.
* Ability to identify and allocate technical elements of projects to team members or third-party providers.
* Be the customer focal point for technical project aspects.
* Expertise in overall design management of 33kV to 132kV underground or overhead line projects.
* Experience in primary substation design (11kV to 132kV), including plant specifications.
* Awareness of major plant items such as transformers and circuit breakers.
* Sign off on Protection & Control designs, including specifications.
* Experience with electrical engineering design and practices.
* Good knowledge of electricity distribution business operations.
* Experience with CDM regulations related to utility projects.
* Experience in planning and designing 132kV substations and private connections.
* Competency in procurement processes and approval of pre-manufacturing drawings.
* Ability to design and draw block cable diagrams, set files, and key line diagrams.
* Proficiency with ETAP, DigSilent (or similar), and AutoCAD.
* Ability to obtain Sub Station Access Authorization or similar credentials.
