About the Role and our Ideal Candidate

Help shape safe, sustainable, and inspiring places for the people of Kingston. From our historic riverside and lively market town to new homes and community spaces, you'll lead on complex and challenging building control cases, from domestic projects to high-rise and mixed-use schemes.

In addition you will:

* Carry out plan assessments, site inspections, enforcement actions, and dangerous structures work.
* Provide technical guidance, mentoring and development support to less experienced colleagues.
* Support the Head of Building Control in driving service improvements, innovation, and income generation.
* Work closely with residents, developers, and partners to ensure compliance with Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act 2022 and the highest safety standards.

We're looking for a proactive, technically excellent surveyor who can combine expertise with a customer-first approach. You will have:

* A degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering or similar.
* Professional membership (RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent) and commitment to CPD.
* Significant experience in Building Control, including complex commercial and residential schemes.
* In-depth knowledge of legislation, codes of practice, and the construction industry.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a supportive team environment.

About Us

As Principal Building Control Surveyor, you'll play a key role in delivering a high-quality Building Control service for Kingston. Working closely with the Head of Building Control, you'll ensure the effective implementation and enforcement of Building Regulations, support the operational delivery of the service, and contribute to its ongoing development. You'll also mentor and guide team members, helping to build a skilled, collaborative, and customer-focused team committed to achieving the best outcomes for our communities.

Building Control forms part of the Councils Planning and Regeneration function comprising, Development Management, Spatial Planning, Infrastructure Planning and Delivery, High Street Recovery and Employment and Skills. Planning and Regeneration is part of the Place Directorate and works alongside Housing, Highways and Regulatory Services, Property and Projects, Cambridge Road Estate Regeneration. We work cohesively across the breath of Place and across other service areas of the Council. Currently alongside the wider domestic and commercial building control applications, the team is working on three major council applications, the New Leisure Centre, Cambridge Road Estate Regeneration and Murray House, a 45 unit later living and supported accommodation scheme.
