Applications are invited from Biomedical Scientists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council to join our Microbiology team at North Tyneside Hospital. The role involves 24/7 service provision, including night shifts, weekends and bank holidays.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will carry out Biomedical Scientist duties in Microbiology, rotating through bacteriology, serology, molecular, mycology and parasitology sections.
* Perform routine and specialist investigations autonomously.
* Deliver high‑quality patient results within turnaround times.
* Provide technical advice to clinicians.
* Lead and supervise training staff.
* Maintain quality control and participate in the 24/7 service.
* Develop and implement standard operating procedures and new methods.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety, data protection and mandatory regulations.
* Use digital systems such as Clinisys Winpath and Q‑pulse.
* Participate in continuous improvement and audit.
Detailed responsibilities
Scientific and technical duties include:
* Carry out all laboratory investigations, report results, and maintain records.
* Assist with maintenance and implementation of SOPs.
* Perform quality control procedures, identify poor performance and initiate corrective actions.
* Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment (WASP, Vitek, BD BacTec, GeneXpert, etc.).
* Manage consumables and reagents efficiently.
* Train staff and maintain a Continuing Professional Development portfolio.
* Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new methods and technologies.
* Maintain safe working practices following Health & Safety policy.
* Adhere to Trust policies and legal requirements.
* Work flexibly and take on duties as required.
Person specification – qualifications and registration
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) accredited by IBMS.
* IBMS Certificate of Competence with HCPC registration.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialty or equivalent training and experience.
* MSc Biomedical Sciences or relevant postgraduate qualification (or working towards).
Experience
* In‑depth specialist knowledge in a pathology discipline post‑registration.
* Postgraduate diploma level knowledge through specialist training and CPD.
* Application of specialist knowledge in a laboratory setting.
* Experience in an NHS pathology laboratory.
* Experience in training staff.
