Overview

We are looking to appoint a Senior Orthopaedic Practitioner to manage staff within the plaster room on a daily basis, prioritising the workload and delegating appropriately under the guidance of the Outpatient Manager. You will be responsible for delivery of the casting/splinting service provision across a wide and varied patient group via referral, throughout HSC and its peripherals.


Responsibilities

* The post holder will be responsible for the skilled application and removal of casts and braces, including complex applications in Theatre (e.g., Scoliosis jackets, hip spicas).
* Provide optimum quality of care to patients, offer support to the MDT and take management responsibility for the plaster room on each shift.
* Practice in accordance with HSC standards and statutory requirements, operating within the boundaries of the role and assessed competencies.
* Lead in new casting diabetic service provision on a weekly basis.
* Provide wound care/removal of clips/sutures and ensure wound/skin under plaster cast is monitored with escalation as needed.
* Lead and guide general nurses on plastering and splinting policies and procedures which are evidence based.
* Administer and manage daily departmental briefings/debriefings and record outcomes; plan and lead the plaster room daily workload with consideration for ward demands, students and learners.
* Ensure documentation of all casting room activity and procedures undertaken; provide written and verbal instructions to patients following cast/splint application; offer telephone advice to patients and coordinate referrals to physiotherapy as appropriate.


Training and Education

* Initiate, develop and deliver education and training programmes to a varied range of staff, including doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals/students.
* Act as a role model, educator and mentor, supporting members of the casting team in clinical and interpersonal skills through regular team briefings and practical workshops/teaching sessions.
* Keep skills and knowledge updated in line with professional/national developments and job requirements.


Leadership/Management

* Address complaints in accordance with HSC policy and report incidents involving staff, patients or visitors as appropriate.
* Monitor and control the use of resources within budgetary limits; assist in managing the allocated orthopaedic budget alongside the unit manager.
* Ensure plaster room environment complies with Health & safety legislation; assist in procurement/tendering processes and liaison with other healthcare professionals to develop new policies and procedures.


Communication

* Lead daily departmental briefings/debriefings and coordinate plaster room workload with ward demands, PCC, students and learners.
* Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and carers; provide patient education on use of aids, slings and splints; participate in daily trauma meetings.
* Coordinate with Community staff regarding treatment options and management of complications; provide guidance to other disciplines in available casting/splinting options.


Audit/IT/Research

* Assist with recording and evaluation of care through clinical audit; lead audit projects related to casting provision, service delivery and standards maintenance.
* Work with Health & Safety to ensure risk and fire assessments are up to date.


Qualifications and Experience

Experience

* Essential: Significant experience in a trauma and orthopaedic setting; ability to assess clinical situations and act appropriately; advanced knowledge of trauma/orthopaedic conditions and treatment options; ability to maintain competency through CPD.
* Desirable: Experience in treating spinal congenital deformity in children and paediatric hip conditions (e.g., DDH).

Qualifications

* Essential: British Casting Certificate; ongoing CPD in relevant clinical areas.
* Desirable: Teaching and assessing qualification.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975; a Disclosure to the DBS will be required. Applicants must have current UK professional registration.
