Job overview

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) Outpatient Department (OPD) provides specialist ophthalmic care and supports a wide range of clinics, including additional sessions such as Clinic H and Clinic G. The department operates Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00, with the possibility of extending working hours to meet service needs. You will be expected to work five days per week within these hours and demonstrate flexibility, as you may be required to work at offsite locations when necessary. This role is essential for maintaining safe staffing levels, improving patient experience, and supporting staff well-being. You will work as part of a dedicated team to ensure efficient clinic flow, excellent patient communication, and adherence to clinical standards.


Main duties of the job

* Support nursing and medical teams in setting up clinics and preparing consulting rooms.
* Clean and maintain consulting rooms and medical equipment in line with infection control standards.
* Assist patients during their visit, ensuring comfort and clear communication.
* Complete basic ophthalmic assessments under supervision.
* Administer prescribed eye drops safely and accurately according to Standard Operating Procedure.
* Collect blood samples and other specimens following Trust protocols.
* Gather patient feedback to support service improvement initiatives.
* Participate in audits and contribute to quality improvement programmes within the department.
* Maintain accurate documentation and uphold confidentiality at all times.
* Work flexibly across OPD and offsite clinics as required.

Person specification


Interview

* Holds National Care Certificate or be willing to undertake and complete within 12 weeks of starting
* Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or GCSE equivalent or undertake and achieve a pass following completion of level 1 functional skills assessment.
* Will be required to undertake level 2 apprenticeship in health care or gain equivalent knowledge and skill through the Trust’s Clinical Support Worker Development Programme.
* Ophthalmology Experience
