Deputy mortuary manager

Palterton
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust
Manager
Posted: 29 August
Offer description

An opportunity has arisen for a fully qualified Anatomical Pathology Technician to join the mortuary team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital as the Deputy Mortuary Manager.

The post has been established to support the Mortuary Service Manager and to work within a team of APTs and MEOs in organising a safe, secure, effective, and comprehensive mortuary, post mortem, and Medical Examiner’s office/service for the needs of Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the wider community.

Applicants should hold the RSPH/RIPHH Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or Level 3 & Level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology). Ideally, candidates will have at least 5 years of post-Diploma/Level 4 mortuary experience, be registered with the Academy for Healthcare Sciences, and/or possess Science Council Registration. Membership of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists is also desirable. A good understanding of medical terminology is essential to work effectively with MEOs and provide a comprehensive service for the bereaved.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of professionalism, compassion, empathy, and maturity. Vigilance regarding the strict confidentiality policy is required. Participation in an on-call rota for out-of-hours APT duties is also expected.

All mortuary staff contribute to the death certification process. APTs play a pivotal role by providing technical assistance, dissection skills, and input to post mortem examinations. They will undertake external examinations of deceased persons as applicable to the Medical Examiner’s Services and work alongside MEOs, who serve as a conduit for bereaved families. The Deputy Mortuary Manager will assist with all processes related to handling the deceased from admission to release, record and database maintenance, and post mortem room duties as directed by the Service Manager and Pathologist.
