Overview:
The Head of Custody is responsible for overseeing the secure custody and safekeeping of crypto-assets for the Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP), in line with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) authorisation for custody services, in addition to the company’s Electronic Money Institution (EMI) operations. Based in Malta, this role ensures the integrity, security, and accessibility of clients’ crypto-assets, implementing robust custody policies and procedures to meet MiCA’s stringent requirements. The Head of Custody collaborates with the CEO, CSO, and compliance teams to safeguard assets and maintain regulatory compliance in a rapidly evolving fintech landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
* Oversee the custody and safekeeping of crypto-assets, ensuring compliance with MiCA requirements for secure storage, client asset segregation, and accessibility.
* Develop and implement custody policies, including key management, wallet security (hot/cold storage), and disaster recovery plans specific to crypto-assets.
* Manage the operational processes for depositing, withdrawing, and transferring crypto-assets, ensuring efficiency, security, and transparency for clients.
* Coordinate with the CSO to integrate custody security measures with the broader ICT and cybersecurity framework under MiCA and ISO 27001 standards.
* Liaise with the Head of Compliance and MLRO to ensure custody operations align with AML/CTF obligations and MiCA client protection standards, reporting to the MFSA as required.
Qualifications:
* Degree in finance, business, information technology, or a related field; certifications in blockchain, crypto custody, or security (e.g., CISM, CCSP) are highly desirable.
* At least 7 years’ experience in custody, asset management, or security leadership, preferably within fintech, crypto-assets, or financial services.
* In-depth knowledge of MiCA custody requirements, crypto wallet technologies, and secure asset management practices.
* Proven ability to design and manage custody systems, with strong expertise in risk management and operational resilience for crypto-assets.
* Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and engage with regulators effectively.
