Housing enforcement officer
£26 per hour

We are seeking an experienced Housing enforcement Officer to act as a lead technical voice within our team. In this role, you will hold a specialism in one or more core environmental health and housing sectors: Environmental Protection, Food Safety, Health and Safety, or Private Sector Housing. You will be the boots on the ground‑inspecting local businesses, tackling complex complaints, and leading legal investigations into noncompliance to protect the public and foster responsible economic growth.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead & Advise: Serve as the subject matter lead, providing expert advice and interpretation guidance on complex environmental health issues to team members, businesses, and elected council members.
* Investigate: Conduct and oversee comprehensive investigations into alleged breaches of legislation, preparing legal reports for formal enforcement action when necessary.
* Inspect & Monitor: Run risk‑based programmed and reactive inspections, alongside sampling and testing regimes across the region.
* Support Local Business: Provide proactive technical guidance to Cumberland businesses to promote compliance, consumer safety, and economic prosperity.
* Develop Programmes: Plan and execute targeted enforcement campaigns alongside public education programmes.
* Collaborate: Mentor and provide technical support to junior Technical Officers within the team.

Essential Criteria:
* Education: A BSc in Environmental Health.
* Experience: A minimum of 3 years of post‑qualification experience within environmental health, backed by ongoing professional development.
* Enforcement Knowledge: Proven competence in managing and leading complex, high‑level statutory investigations.
* Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to confidently convey technical details to diverse audiences.
* Workload Management: Exceptional organisational skills to plan and prioritise a complex, demanding caseload.
* Tech Savvy: Comfortable using modern data software management systems.
* Licence: A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle for work.
