Research Technician - Soils (Maternity cover)

The Vacancy
Main purpose of the job
The James Hutton Institute undertakes research to address challenges in a changing climate. A temporary position (fixed term for 10.5 months starting mid-August 2025) is available to contribute to soils research within the Ecological Sciences Group, a multidisciplinary team focused on sustainable management of natural resources. Soil is a vital natural resource influencing ecosystem services such as carbon storage, food production, and flood mitigation. The role aims to optimize soil use while maintaining soil health, essential for both short and long-term sustainability.
The role involves laboratory and field work, including regular sampling across Scotland.
This position is for 21 hours per week.
* Manage soil physics laboratories and equipment
* Quantify soil hydraulic properties, including saturated hydraulic conductivity and water release characteristics
* Measure soil parameters like bulk density and penetrometer resistance
* Maintain accurate records of work and data
* Prepare equipment for field sampling and coordinate sampling activities
* Install sensors in the field for environmental monitoring
* Process soil and root samples
* Participate in knowledge exchange events to showcase soil research
Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge
* BSc or HND with soil-related experience
* Research experience in lab and/or field settings
* Proficiency with spreadsheets and word processing software
* Experience in both field and lab research
* Teamwork skills
* Good communication and interpersonal skills
* Organizational and time management skills
* Self-motivated with a positive attitude
* Knowledge of good laboratory practices, health and safety, and risk assessment
* Understanding of soils' importance in agriculture and environmental services
* Experience with data loggers or monitoring equipment
* Hands-on experience working with soils
The role is based in Dundee with occasional travel for sampling at local and research sites across Scotland.
