We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Outpatients department at Harefield Hospital. As part of the world-renowned Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust—the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK—you will play a vital role in delivering sophisticated, high-quality care to patients with complex cardiac and respiratory conditions.
In this role, you will work closely with the Sister/Charge Nurse to monitor clinical standards and foster staff development. You will act as a visible team leader, ensuring that patient needs are met to a consistently high standard while maintaining a safe and efficient clinical environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a registered nurse with an active NMC pin and post-registration experience to take the next step in their leadership journey

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the ward team and taking charge of the department as required. Key responsibilities include:
1. Clinical Leadership: Acting as a team leader and role model, demonstrating expert clinical procedures, and supervising both qualified and unqualified staff.
2. Patient Advocacy: Assessing, planning, and implementing holistic programs of care while acting as a staunch advocate for patients in line with the NHS plan.
3. Staff Development: Taking responsibility for the performance and professional development of junior staff, including acting as a mentor and participating in preceptorship programs.
4. Operational Management: Regularly taking charge of the clinical area, ensuring safe staffing levels are maintained for every shift, and managing resources and stock effectively.
5. Quality & Safety: Identifying and reporting clinical risks, participating in nursing audits, and ensuring compliance with Trust policies, CQUIN targets, and Clinical Governance frameworks.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Excellence and Patient Care You will provide direct and indirect care by formulating individual care pathways and planning for discharges. You are expected to implement evidence-based practices that improve care quality and address the spiritual, socio-economic, and cultural needs of our diverse patient group. You will maintain impeccable nursing documentation and contribute to a departmental ethos focused on excellence.
Communication and Collaboration Effective communication is at the heart of this role. You will maintain professional relationships with the multidisciplinary team, matrons, and unit managers. You must adapt your communication style to overcome barriers to understanding and always promote a positive image of the Trust.
Resource and Service Management You will assist in planning duty rotas that balance service needs with flexible rostering. You will contribute to local policy development and participate in the collection of audit and research data to drive service improvements.
