        About us
We are looking for a talented PhD student to join the Molecular Biology of Cancer Laboratory, led by Dr. Ivana Bjedov, at the UCL Cancer Institute (Bjedov Lab | Molecular Biology of Cancer | UCL Cancer Institute). The project is collaborative with Prof. Susana Godinho (Queen Mary University of London).
The Bjedov lab focuses on ageing and cancer, with emphasis on protein synthesis, DNA repair, and ageing research to protect normal tissues from radiation therapy side effects. The Godinho lab specializes in centrosome biology and tumorigenesis and employs model systems including 2D and 3D cell cultures.
About the role
Project Overview
Radiotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, yet effective radioprotectors remain elusive. This PhD project explores how protein synthesis influences radiation response in cancer and normal tissues. By understanding translational changes post-radiation, we aim to identify novel targets to enhance radiotherapy outcomes.
Research Aims
 * Aim 1: Use patient-derived assembloids to monitor macromolecular damage and protein synthesis after radiation exposure.
 * Aim 2: Characterise differential translation in tumour vs. fibroblast cells using ribosome profiling and RNA-seq.
 * Aim 3: Validate top candidate genes/pathways via pharmacological and CRISPR/Cas9 approaches to modulate radiation response.
Training & Environment
You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team at the UCL Cancer Institute, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge models (assembloids, organoids) and technologies. The project bridges cancer biology and ageing research, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to translational science with real clinical impact.
