Job Description

Overall Purpose:

The role will undertake general electrical repairs, maintenance, installation and fault-finding at the Mary Lyon Centre, MRC Harwell. Working on a single site, the role is 36 hours per week located on Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot.

Main Duties/Key Responsibilities:

4. Undertake installation, operation, fault finding and maintenance of the electrical building services (including lighting and emergency lighting/general power 230–415V, fire alarms, door access, IT and communication systems)
5. Carry out works efficiently and effectively, acquiring and signing off work through the MRC-designated Planet FM mobile device application
6. Undertake an active role in site services condition surveys and, where required, formal inspection, testing and verification of electrical systems (additional training and qualifications may be provided)
7. Carry out compliance-related maintenance tasks, including emergency lighting testing and repairs, fire alarm remedial works and general electrical reactive repairs
8. Ensure that all work carried out on the MRC estate is completed in an effective and professional manner and that all current Health & Safety and technical legislation is adhered to, including: Risk assessments and method statements (produced by in-house staff)Safe systems of work (permits/isolation procedures/hot works/testing and recommissioning)
9. Ensure that works are completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion, so as to minimise their impact upon scientific programmes
10. Accept training in future developments and technologies, taking on additional nominated person responsibilities as required
11. Provide additional support and assistance to the Building Services Team in maintenance and repairs of the estate and any other duties which may from time to time reasonably be required within the general level of responsibility of the post
12. Engage in the mentoring and development of team members, including the support of apprentices
13. Champion the Engineering & Estates service in a positive manner
14. Deliver a high level of customer service
15. Attend appropriate training to support the role and service delivery
16. Participate as part of an engineering on-call team as required (subject to management approval and operational requirements)
17. Procure materials, components and spares, ensuring that stock levels are maintained to maintain efficiency
18. Take on the role of first aider (training will be given)

Education/Qualifications/Training Required:

Essential:

19. Recognised electrical qualification, such as City & Guilds level 2/3, NVQ Level 3 or be in the final year of a recognised apprenticeship scheme
20. Proven experience in a relevant engineering field
21. UK driving licence

Desirable:

22. City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing / relevant experience of electrical testing and fault diagnosis

Previous Work Experience Required:

Essential:

23. Two years’ experience within electrical industry

Desirable:

24. Demonstrable experience with varied cabled systems, mechanical plant and controls (e.g. building management systems, HVAC, access control, fire alarm)

Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

25. Comprehensive understanding of electrical systems demonstrated by qualification
26. Qualified to BS7671 – 18th Edition

Desirable:

27. Demonstrable experience/knowledge of building services systems
28. Prior knowledge of routine planned preventative maintenance (PPM) systems and applications

Personal skills/Behaviours/Qualities:

Essential:

29. Conscientious, self-motivated, punctual, team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
30. Able to work in a methodical and structured way, confident in dealing with suppliers and service users
31. Able to work within a multi-disciplinary team and able to communicate effectively with colleagues and the wider scientific community
