Job Overview
Are you a registered Pharmacy Technician or soon to be qualified? Join our dynamic Pharmacy Dispensary team at Northampton General Hospital. You will receive excellent training in an NHS hospital setting, contributing to the development of our services and supporting a range of pharmacy activities including clinical services, stock management, Quality Control, and a comprehensive Distribution Service.
Responsibilities
* Accurately and promptly dispense prescriptions for in‑patients, out‑patients, day‑patients and leave/discharge patients.
* Issue dispensed medicines to patients and confirm they know how to use them.
* Supply controlled drugs and keep appropriate records.
* Undertake final‑checking according to a defined policy when competence has been proven.
* Undertake enhanced patient counselling following appropriate training.
* Act as a coordinator in the dispensary department when required.
* Participate in late night and weekend service provision.
* Take part in the staff rotation system and undertake duties elsewhere in Pharmacy to maintain service.
* Issue and/or top‑up supplies of stock preparations for wards, departments and other areas.
* Assist with maintaining appropriate storage and stock levels of medicines to ensure quality, potency and economy.
* Help manage the computerised pharmacy stock control system and take part in daily stock checks.
* Assess and return medicines for re‑use in accordance with departmental policy.
* Maintain necessary records and collate information for reports.
* Undertake duties in the Pharmacy Quality Assurance Service.
* Deputise for Senior Pharmacy Technicians when required.
* Assist in the training of pharmacy and other staff, supervising Pharmacy Dispensers.
* Perform other duties elsewhere across the organization as required.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered Pharmacy Technician or currently enrolled in a qualifying course (within 3 months).
* Registered Technician with GPhC if qualified.
* Hospital Pharmacy experience.
* Knowledge of medicines, including handling of potentially hazardous substances.
* Experience with computerised stock control systems and final checking of dispensed medicines.
* Understanding of patient counselling on medication use.
* Knowledge of good manufacturing practice.
* Experience in training other staff and supervisory roles within pharmacy.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure.
* Attention to accuracy.
* Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
