Consultant Community Paediatrician

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our outstanding and expanding team at Nottingham Children's Hospital as a Consultant in Community Paediatrics.

Consultant Community Paediatrician (8PAs)

We are seeking one 8 PA Consultant Community Paediatrician to join the Community Paediatrics Service at Nottingham Children's Hospital.

The post holder will be an integral part of Nottingham Children's Hospital Community Paediatric team, supporting delivery of services for Children in Care at the Child Development Centre (CDC) and from one or more locality clinics within the Greater Nottinghamshire area (Nottingham City and South Nottinghamshire County). There is also contribution to the daytime safeguarding rota/clinics for suspected non-accidental injuries supported by senior paediatricians.

Successful applicants will have an exciting experience working with the Children's Hospital team at Nottingham University Hospitals and have opportunities to be involved in Quality improvement projects or research.

Applicants must be on the GMC specialist register, or within 6 months of their expected date of CCT at time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The bulk of the Community Paediatric clinic work is carried out in six geographical patches, plus the Child Development Centre, and each patch team is led by a consultant who also carries district wide responsibilities. We also have close working with allied health including some joint clinics. Together, the team provide comprehensive general and specialist community child health services including paediatric referral clinics (GP referral) in all the main health centres, and work within local specialist schools. There are close links with primary care teams, education, and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health team who cover the same area.

This post requires Monday-Friday working patterns (job plan attached) Full or Part time with no on-call working requirements.

Job responsibilities

Whilst main clinics may have set days, other activities are more variable and flexible and so the exact time and day of the week may vary according to demand or your existing commitments. Flexible working from home is possible for some activities and a laptop with remote secure access to hospital systems will be provided.

Both posts include scope for developing exciting roles involving specialist skills and interests, and these are detailed in the individual job plans below. Appropriate training and support to undertake these roles would be provided. Candidates wishing to expand their interests in specialist safeguarding or assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) would be particularly encouraged. Other possibilities for special interest include Down syndrome, neurodisability, sleep, hearing pathway, sexual assault, children in care/looked after, or another area that the candidate wishes to explore and that meets with service objectives.

Less than full time applications are welcome, but core DCC elements of the role must be included in the final agreed job plan.


Person Specification


Training and qualifications

* MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
* Full GMC registration On the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT or CESR-CP in Paediatrics.
* Capable to work at Consultant level in Community Child Health
* Paediatric advanced life support and Level 3 safeguarding training up to date.
* Teaching and training experience and Medical education supervisor training
* Publications in peer reviewed journals / presentations at regional / national academic meetings
* Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree DCH, DCCH, MBA or other relevant diplomas
* CCT or equivalent in subspeciality of Community Child Health


Clinical Skills/Experience

* Has achieved the competencies relating to General Paediatric Training, usually after 2 years of General Professional Training in Paediatrics
* Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to Higher Specialist Paediatric Training including usually 3 years in Community Child Health (usually after 5 years of Higher Specialist Training in total).
* Experience of ASD and ADHD assessment and current UK legislation relating to Code of Practice and Education Act
* Experience conducting Section 47 (NAI) medicals


Comms/relationship skills

* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
* Can lead a team and has experience with working in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Formal management training
* Experience of formal report writing (e.g. court report, statement, EHCP, ASD diagnostic report)

* UK Driving Licence with access to a car to facilitate travel between the various sites


Analytical/planning

* Evidence of being able to problem solve, multi task and cope with a range of competing demands at the same time
* Good at time management with ability to prioritize activity demands while maintaining professional practice and desirable patient outcome
* Evidence of being able develop a CYP specific management plan
