Overview
Clinical Scientist, Virology at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust. You will work with the existing clinical and laboratory teams in the delivery of the clinical (including infection control) and laboratory service (including service development and training).
The on-call service may require weekend work. This is currently delivered remotely from home, with rare occasions of on-site attendance.
Responsibilities
* Provide clinical, technical and supervisory support within a diagnostic virology laboratory, under the guidance of senior consultants.
* Play a key role in clinical liaison, laboratory operations and infection prevention and control; ensure accurate interpretation and timely reporting of laboratory results.
* Collaborate with clinical colleagues to manage patient care and contribute to the teaching of medical students, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
* Engage in research, clinical audits and departmental quality improvement activities; participate in leadership and policy development where appropriate.
* Apply specialized diagnostic virology knowledge to troubleshoot assays, maintain good laboratory practices and uphold high quality assurance standards.
* Prioritise workload to meet national and local performance targets and contribute to development of new techniques, equipment and working practices.
* Participate in pan-pathology projects, prepare reports and update standard operating procedures; participate in weekend rota and clinical incident reporting (DATIX).
* Be involved in clinical liaison, ward rounds and attendance at MDTs; authorise laboratory reports and action follow-up procedures as required; inform the requester of clinically significant results.
* Liaise with clinical colleagues regarding diagnosis and patient management; contribute to teaching across the trust.
* Participate in research and development; attend journal clubs, research meetings and relevant scientific meetings; contribute to clinical audits and department policy development.
* Be involved in planning departmental policies and developing leadership qualities, initially under supervision.
* Contribute to the production of business cases for the department.
* Use DATIX for reporting clinical incidents.
* Weekend working: participate fully in the weekend rota.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Successful completion of Grade A or STP training; MSc in Microbiology or related subject; current HCPC registration as a clinical scientist.
* Successful applicants may be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from a UK occupational health provider or UK GP.
Location and Team Structure
Viral serology services are located at the GEH laboratory; Molecular diagnostics services are centralised at the UHCW site in Coventry. The clinical team is based at UHCW with travel to other CWPS sites required.
