Job Description:
Brief Description
You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.
About the role (External)
Our technicians serve as the vital link between team leaders and operatives.
Technicians specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you'll become a specialist in:
Track: Responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This involves manual work with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.
Team Dynamics
As a natural team player, you'll also be able to lead when asked, using your skills to deliver work safely and ensure your team has the necessary competencies. You'll model safe working behaviors and confidently challenge potential safety risks to ensure everyone's safety.
Career Development
Today's technicians can progress to become tomorrow's team leaders. We value your commitment to self-development and continuous learning, providing training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Even if you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding rail career.
While rail experience isn't mandatory, demonstrating your transferable skills is essential, including:
* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Ability to deliver clear instructions to your team and colleagues.
* Technical skills: Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role modeling safe behaviors, implementing safe systems, and challenging unsafe situations.
* Problem solving: Persistence in finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated with standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally, NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.
Additional Information
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends with changing patterns.
* Outdoor Working: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safety Checks: Employment is subject to drug/alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including eye and hearing exams.
* Driving: Must hold a valid category B driving license to operate company vehicles.
* Commute: Reside within 60 minutes of the work location.
