Overview
Your job can include: Gate duties + ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, vehicles; carrying out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles; patrolling the prison site; issuing and collecting staff keys and radios; and escorting vehicles and contractors around the site. You may also work in the control room, visits, correspondence, night duties, reception, prisoner supervision, food delivery, driving duties and phone calls as part of a varied role that helps keep a prison running smoothly and safely.
Responsibilities
* Gate duties: ensure secure entry/exit for staff, visitors, and vehicles; carry out searches as required.
* On-site patrols: walk around the prison site; escort vehicles and contractors; patrol perimeter fence areas.
* Control room: operate the prison radio system; monitor CCTV and report suspicious activity.
* Visits: welcome visitors on arrival and provide escort as needed.
* Correspondence: monitor and log mail; report contraband and preserve evidence where needed.
* Night duties: ensure cell doors are secured and prisoners are accounted for.
* Reception: photograph prisoners; process prisoners’ property and parcels coming into the prison.
* Prisoner supervision: supervise prisoners as required; exchange clothing and property; assist with escorts around the prison.
* Food delivery: walk around delivering and collecting food trolleys, or operate an electric tug vehicle as needed.
* Driving duties: transport prisoners and escorts to destinations; collect mail from local sorting office (may involve lifting heavy sacks).
* Phone calls: monitor the prison’s PIN phone system; maintain logs of PIN phone requests; complete relevant records.
* Procedures and protocol: understand and conform to national/local policies; respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies.
Qualifications and Requirements
* You do not need any formal qualifications to do this job.
* Ability to fulfil spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English; Welsh language may be required where specified.
* Must be able to perform physical tasks typical of prison support work (lifting, standing, walking, periods of lone working).
* Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check.
* People working with government assets must complete baseline personnel security standard checks.
* Driving duties require a full, valid driving licence; some establishments require driving as part of the role.
* Eligibility to work in the UK as specified; some nationality requirements may apply.
Additional Information
* Work patterns: 37 hours per week; night shifts/evenings/weekends may be included; flexible arrangements may be discussed.
* Hybrid working: some roles may offer hybrid arrangements where business needs allow.
* Location: some prisons are rural; transport options should be considered when applying.
* Tattoos: tattoos are permitted if not offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable except for cultural/religious/medical reasons.

Benefits and Conditions
* Salary: National - £29,432 (37 hours per week, includes 20% unsocial hours allowance).
* Leave: 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years; 9 bank/public/privilege holidays; pro-rata for part-time work.
