Principal structural engineer

Role Description

We are growing our Structural Engineering team within the Places Design Practice. We are looking for a Principal Structural Engineer based in the UK with a strong technical background and experience in leading the structural aspects of projects. You will work for a multitude of clients at national and international level on varied projects, covering industrial manufacturing, technology, education, government, and defence. You will create iconic structures such as data centers, distribution centers, gigafactories, manufacturing facilities, schools, offices, retail premises, and public buildings. Your work will span all project stages, both new and existing, including those with stringent security requirements. You will operate in a multidisciplinary team, deploying digital solutions to improve quality of life.

Role Accountabilities

• Lead the design and coordination of structures across a range of projects.
• Manage technical and commercial aspects, leading teams of structural engineers and BIM modellers and interfacing with clients and stakeholders.
• Participate in the technical quality process by validating the work of other team members.
• Mentor engineers and colleagues in project contexts and broader team endeavours.

Qualifications & Experience

• Relevant degree.
• Professional qualification, preferably as a chartered member of the IStructE or the ICE.
• Existing SC clearance or eligibility to achieve SC security clearance.
• Strong technical ability based on deep knowledge of structural principles, developed through experience in a variety of projects.
• Familiarity with commonly used structural materials, including knowledge of their specification and on‑site use.
• Knowledge of commonly used structural analysis and design programs.
• Outstanding commitment to health and safety and knowledge of relevant legal requirements.
• Excellent communication skills and experience preparing technical reports.
• Attention to detail and acumen when reviewing the work of others to ensure quality.
• Interest in sustainable solutions and commitment to sustainable outcomes.
• Ability to successfully manage teams and resources on projects.
• Willingness to share knowledge and mentor others.
