Cleaning Operative - fixed term until 01/04/2026

Salary: £25,322 - £25,623 (pro-rata for part-time and sessional)
Hours: 20 per week, 40 weeks sessional
Monday - Friday 16:00 - 20:00

Responsibilities
* Responsible for the general cleaning of the premises in accordance with the Service Level Agreement, under the direction of the Cleaning Supervisor whilst ensuring all cleaning materials/equipment are handled and utilised in a safe and conscientious manner.
* Maintain the standard of cleaning to support the retention of QHSAS 18001 and ISO 9001.
* Empty litter and recycling bins.
* Clean all surfaces, internal glass, floors, furniture, fixtures and fittings within a group of buildings.
* Clean all sanitary areas, toilets and showers and replenish washroom consumables.
* Perform emergency and reactive cleaning as required, e.g. removal of graffiti, body fluid spillages, accidental spillages.
* Log issues and escalate to management as appropriate; act autonomously and, in some cases, make decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
* Care and cleanliness of all equipment used in carrying out duties.
* Report safety or maintenance issues to the Cleaning Supervisor or Janitorial staff.
* Support cleaning tasks across other buildings where required.
* Inform appropriate staff of security or safety risks and take appropriate actions when safe to do so.
* Deliver to cleaning specification requirements and cooperate with performance measurement to meet overall standards.
* Deal with enquiries from members of the public as required.
Knowledge and Skills
* Cleaning Operatives must obtain (through CEC funded training) the BICSc qualification and demonstrate knowledge of equipment use and safe working practices.
* Good standard of communication and applied knowledge of cleaning within Council policy, practices and processes; with relevant qualifications or demonstrable knowledge in Health and Safety.
* Demonstrate a passion for high cleaning standards, to resolve issues or make improvements.
* Demonstrate a curiosity to grow knowledge and professional development.
* Demonstrate ability to self-motivate and manage own time.
* The post will involve liaison with council/other staff and incidental contact with the general public; a high degree of customer care and behavioural standards are required.
Environment
* The post holder will follow an agreed rostering and work schedule; a degree of flexibility is required during deployment to account for prevailing conditions.
* Should unforeseen circumstances arise, this should be agreed in communication with the Cleaning Supervisor.
* Post holder will be responsible for ensuring deadlines are adhered to in line with the needs of service users.
* The post will require physical demands for a cleaning operative including operation of manual and powered cleaning equipment; lifting, brushing, polishing and vacuuming.
* Work is predominantly indoors with some exposure to adverse working conditions; may involve contact with body spillages, chemical products, construction materials and may require PPE; all work is to be carried out to agreed method statements and risk assessments.
* The post will involve working in a variety of buildings and environments across the estate; health and safety/customer care processes must be followed.
Supervision and Management of People
* The Cleaning Operative will have no direct line management responsibility, but may assist with induction of new staff in the absence of a supervisor.
Resources
Facilities Management has overall responsibility for keyholding to enable opening and closing of buildings that we service. As part of the duties of a Cleaning Operative, you may be required to be a key holder to fulfil these tasks. This typically would include operation of security alarm systems, closing accessible windows and doors and switching off lights, ensuring that premises are left safe and secure. The post will have shared responsibility for the security and maintenance of relevant Council equipment including cleaning equipment and the use of materials, cleaning products and consumables.

Line managers have additional responsibilities for ensuring all health and safety risks under their management are identified, assessed and controlled, with specialist input from H&S Advisers and others including Occupational Health where required. This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
