Job Description:
The Operations, Service and Maintenance (OS&M) Fleet Systems Engineering team provides technical ownership and engineering support for all Hitachi Rail in‑service fleets across the UK. The team delivers expert solutions to complex engineering problems and provides specialist input to engineering and maintenance activities throughout the fleet lifecycle.
As the UK Design Authority for in‑service fleets, the team is responsible for managing the Technical Library and maintaining design and technical information in line with contractual requirements.
This role provides mechanical engineering support across all Hitachi Rail fleets, including undertaking root cause analysis of engineering issues, developing understanding of complex problems, and identifying both short‑term mitigations and long‑term corrective actions. The role also involves progressing corrective actions through to readiness for implementation on the fleet and forming part of the UK‑based Design Authority for mechanical systems and vehicle structures.
The role is based at Doncaster Carr Train Maintenance Centre, supporting Hitachi Rail fleets nationwide. Occasional overnight travel within the UK will be required to support operations across Great Western, ScotRail and East Coast Main Line routes.
Mechanical Systems Engineer responsibilities
* Provide specialist mechanical engineering support of train systems and components, taking ownership of assigned train systems to be the Subject Matter Expert ‘SME’ on those functions.
* Producing technical reports to detail outcomes and recommendations following technical investigations and escalating any arising issues.
* Managing detail of engineering change.
* Deputising for the Mechanical Systems Engineering Manager during times of absence if required.
* Carrying out thorough root cause analysis of any critical technical issues including operational events and failures, supporting with high‑quality reports.
* Development and implementation of engineering procedures and policies regarding level of train fleet maintenance specified by customer/contract requirements and compliant with legislative regulations.
* Developing and maintaining a good working relationship with third party OEMs and suppliers.
* Responsible for supporting optimisation of the Company’s maintenance regime and assisting in the development of World Class maintenance practices in support of current and future contracts.
* Responsible for liaising with Hitachi Japanese design and manufacturing teams to ensure that Japanese best practice and product knowledge is transferred to the UK operation.
* Responsible for ensuring adequate levels of H & S and environmental issues are maintained across departmental activities and compliant with company policy and Health & Safety at Work Act requirements.
* Responsible for the performance of H & S and Environmental risk assessments covering departmental activities.
* Liaison with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
* Must be prepared to travel overnight away from base location for short periods of time to support Great Western, ScotRail and East Coast Main Line operations.
* May be invited to take part in overseas meetings or workshops, including visits to sites in Japan and third‑party suppliers in Europe and North America.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential Requirements
* Excellent knowledge of a selection of mechanical systems, both technically and operationally.
* Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, technical standards, codes of practice and design principles.
* Excellent knowledge of the laws and standards that apply and proven experience in applying these standards to real world solutions and problems.
* Proven experience at delivering complex mechanical solutions in an industrial, manufacturing or transportation environment.
* Comfortable with ‘hands on’ engineering for on‑train investigations when needed.
* Sound understanding of health and safety requirements in a practical working environment.
* Ability to work with minimal supervision, to clear targets and deliverables, and within a tight project support environment.
* Ability to work under own initiative.
* Strong command of the English language.
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Commitment to working as part of a team.

Desirable
* Experience in the Railway Industry.
* Knowledge of the UK Railway Operations and Engineering Safety Management System.
* Previous CAD and/or FEA experience (e.g. Ansys, PRoE, SolidWorks/SolidEdge).
* Knowledge of vehicle structures and related standards such as GM/RT 2100, BS EN 12663, BS EN 1999 VDI2230 or similar.
* Experience with steel and aluminium welding, exposure to BS EN 15085.
* Direct knowledge or experience of implementing and developing engineering design and assurance plans.
* Knowledge of Common Safety Method or similar.
* Professional registration with a relevant Engineering Institution (e.g. IEng, CEng with IMechE, IET etc.).
Qualifications
* Engineering degree (i.e. BSc, BEng or MEng/MSc) in a relevant engineering discipline such as Mechanical or Aerospace, or the ability to demonstrate substantial experience within a technical industry.
