Overview

Clinical Engineer – Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (DCHFT), Dorchester, UK. Band 5, Permanent, Full‑time, £31,049–£37,796 per annum. Report to the Senior Clinical Engineer. Work location: Williams Avenue, Dorchester (DT1 2JY).

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Engineer, preferably with several years in the NHS, to join our growing team. Candidates with less experience may be considered for an initial Band 4 appointment.


Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Senior Clinical Engineer, you will:

* Undertake repair, maintenance and performance checking of high‑value electronic and mechanical medical devices used in diagnosis and treatment.
* Order parts and accessories for medical equipment.
* Monitor and rotate stock levels to minimise wastage.
* Review working practices, advise on changes and suggest efficiency improvements.
* Coordinate external training on new equipment for clinical and nursing staff, assist departments with training records, and update F2 database with training details.


Essential Qualifications

* Good level of general education to GCSE standard or equivalent.
* Engineering qualification or degree in a relevant subject, with evidence of specific training in medical devices.
* European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent.


Essential Experience

* Experience repairing, maintaining and performance‑checking complex specialist medical devices (e.g. infusion pumps, diathermy machines, defibrillators, patient monitoring).
* Experience with medical device databases and networked devices (wired and Wi‑Fi).
* Appropriate engineering theory knowledge to diagnose faults on complex devices.
* Experience working within a Quality Management System.


Essential Skills & Abilities

* Operating equipment safely in all modes of operation and verifying correct operation.
* Electronic and mechanical engineering skills: test & measuring equipment, component assembly, fault finding, use of technical manuals and circuitry.
* Intermediate IT skills – MS Office and complex database interrogation (e.g. F2).
* Good organisational, prioritisation and time‑management skills.
* Strong written and verbal communication; ability to discuss device use with nursing, clinical, scientific and management staff.
* Full UK driving licence and own transport for service visits.


Additional Information

Right to Work in the UK: Applicants must already have the legal right to work in the UK. The role is not available for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check is required. Current UK professional registration is mandatory.
