SEN Teaching Assistant
Role: Learning Support Assistant (SEN)
Location: Farnborough
Hours: Full-Time / Part-Time Options
This expanding special needs school supports children and young people aged 2–19 with a wide range of complex learning difficulties, including:
1. Severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
2. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
3. Language disorders, sensory impairments and physical disabilities
The school offers a highly structured, nurturing and multi-disciplinary learning environment. There is a strong emphasis on communication, independence, emotional regulation, physical development and personalised learning. Staff use a range of specialist approaches such as PECS, TEACCH and sensory integration to meet individual needs.
Main Responsibilities
4. Provide 1:1 and small-group support to help pupils access learning and work towards their individual Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.
5. Support pupils with personal care, mobility and physical needs where required.
6. Assist pupils in managing sensory and emotional needs, using positive behaviour and regulation strategies.
7. Promote communication development using visual supports, specialist tools and augmentative communication methods.
8. Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists (e.g., Speech & Language, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy) to adapt resources and ensure consistency of support.
9. Keep accurate records of pupil progress and communicate key information to teachers and relevant staff.
10. Take part in ongoing training and professional development to deepen skills in SEND practices.
What We’re Looking For
11. Experience working with children or young people with SEND, or a genuine motivation to develop in this area.
12. Patience, empathy, flexibility and emotional resilience.
13. Strong communication skills and the ability to form positive, trusting relationships.
14. A team-focused approach, with the confidence to use initiative when needed.
15. Willingness to support physical, medical or mobility needs.
16. A proactive attitude towards learning and adopting new strategies.
Requirements
17. An enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
18. Eligibility to work in the UK.
