Introduction
DCA is seeking a new Head of Exhibitions to lead the development, curation, and delivery of contemporary art exhibitions, commissions, projects, publications, and events as part of DCA’s creative and cultural programme.
Working closely with the Director, the Head of Exhibitions will shape and fulfill DCA’s critically acclaimed and diverse programme of Scottish, British, and international contemporary art. This role involves leading programme activities within the gallery and beyond, including commissioning, touring, publications, and partnership projects.
DCA is a central part of city and community life and a key visitor attraction in Dundee. It was nominated as Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2024 and named one of Scotland’s five best art galleries by The Times. Its exhibitions are regularly previewed and reviewed by major publications such as The Guardian, Frieze, Art Monthly, Art Review, and Studio International.

Pay:£40,000 plus 15.7% employer pension contribution through the Tayside Pension Fund (Local Government Pension Scheme); research, travel, and expenses budget as part of role

Job Purpose
The Head of Exhibitions is responsible for developing, curating, and delivering a programme of contemporary art exhibitions, commissions, projects, publications, and events as part of DCA’s creative and cultural initiatives.
This role involves working closely with the Director to shape DCA’s vibrant programme of Scottish, British, and international contemporary art. The Head of Exhibitions leads activities both within the gallery and externally through commissioning, touring, publications, and partnerships.
The post holder manages the Exhibitions team, including the Exhibitions Manager (who oversees freelance Technicians), the Exhibitions Coordinator, and the Exhibitions Assistant. As a member of DCA’s Senior Management Team (SMT), the Head of Exhibitions collaborates with other senior leaders in areas such as audience development, funding, film projects, and residencies.
Additionally, the Head of Exhibitions works with the Visitor Services Manager to ensure the Visitor Assistants are well-informed and equipped to provide excellent visitor experiences. The role also supports the Director in delivering the final year of the We Contain Multitudes project, culminating in a major group exhibition, and promotes anti-ableist learning across DCA’s activities.

They will work with external partners and organizations to deliver an ambitious, sustainable, and regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized programme aligned with DCA’s mission, vision, and values.
