Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 7 substantive Gynaecology Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist at St Richards Hospital, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will be working as an integral part of the CNS and wider gynaecology team, involved in all aspects of the patients' pathway from diagnosis and treatment, through to follow-up and supporting patients living with a gynaecological cancer diagnosis.

The successful applicant will be keen to advance their clinical and leadership skills, taking on extended roles and looking to develop the service. They will be dynamic, forward thinking, hard working and have a keen interest in gynaecology cancer patient care.

Main duties of the job

* To provide clinical excellence, leadership, innovation and mastery within a speciality, or group of specialties, through highly developed specialist knowledge. This should be provided with passion and enthusiasm with the aim of constantly improving care.
* The post-holder will have responsibility and accountability for supporting a caseload of patients through the cancer pathway, from suspected cancer, a new cancer diagnosis, treatment, and those with recurrence or advanced disease, acting as a patient advocate.
* To holistically assess and plan care for patients with complex needs, planning, evaluating, co-ordinating and communicating care to streamline and support patient through pathway.
* Providing specialist information and support for patients and carers during the diagnosis and treatment of cancer; ensuring patients have psychological assessment and intervention as necessary.
* To work autonomously and dynamically alongside the Multi-disciplinary Team to ensure the patient has a timely journey through the pathway.
* Acts as keyworker for patients, central point for patient contact throughout the cancer journey into follow up, personalised and end of life care. Sharing the caseload with the other CNSs; active participation in MDT; Working closely with other CNS teams such as palliative care and AOT. Close liaison with other members of MDT to ensure deliver care. Close liaison with oncology teams at cancer centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Service Delivery and Improvement

* Analyse and assimilate complex information and decide on most appropriate pathway for the patient
* Critically analyse and assess information and in turn demonstrate clear understanding and application of this information in the patient pathway and day to day work.
* Work closely with other teams such as acute oncology to assess patients with emergency presentations using specialist skills and knowledge
* Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving
* Assess complex situations and make clinical decisions regarding care in the absence of precedents, and sometimes without resource to others following assessment and interpretation of patient’s
* Support all professionals in co-ordinating the patient’s journey and ensure high standards of written and verbal advice is available to patients, relatives, carers, the MDT and external
* Demonstrates high level of expertise in gynaecology cancers and act as a resource in all aspects of patient’s needs from acute to follow up care for patients with gynaecological Planning, implementing and evaluating care delivery across the changing health needs.
* Effectively prioritise care packages under a demanding workload
* Assess complex individual needs and respond appropriately, making difficult decisions on a daily basis
* Assimilate and translate information to assist patients in complex decision making
* Able to use assessment skills in diagnosing treatment related toxicity and deciding on best treatment intervention
* Assessment of mental capacity and therefore understanding/awareness of mental capacity act
* Monitor, evaluate and audit the service quality, and develop reporting mechanisms in order meet guidelines as per National Institute of Health (NICE), National Service Framework (NSF) Clinical Excellence and locally set Develop strategies and care pathways which facilitate innovation and improvements to practice
* Lead in developing/implementing evidence based practice within the clinical environment with a multi-professional focus having the ability to facilitate, initiate, manage and evaluate change in practice to improve quality of
* Ensure any safeguarding issues are raised appropriately to lead nurses to enable investigation in relation to vulnerable adults and
* To engage actively in development of services with Macmillan Cancer Matron and other cancer CNS
* To ensure development of nurse led services within specialist remit responding to the changing health care environment
* Initiate service change following audit outcomes
* Evaluation of service change and report to Trust
* To raise areas of concern in line with the clinical governance
* To adhere to the NMC code of conduct at all times
* To provide an annual report of activity and development of the service
* To be a core member of the gynaecology cancer multi-disciplinary team in line with Cancer Measures Standards, active involvement in peer review preparation
* To be aware of government policies and agendas pertaining to cancer/palliative and supportive care
* Engage positively with the national cancer nursing agenda to ensure services are in line with
* Keep up to date with national requirements including national survey results and respond with action plan development
* Assist the Macmillan Cancer Matron in identifying and implementing training and development programmes for all staff caring for patients with a gynaecology
* Demonstrates professional knowledge acquired through state registration and degree level specialist qualification supplements by ongoing training and
* Acts in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and Scope for Expanded Practices for Nurses, Midwives and Health
* Promote and participate in the development of nursing research and audit, ensuring dissemination of outcomes to promote effective
* Publish work appropriately in professional journals and to present same at professional conferences, sharing the knowledge gained with other specialist and non-specialist
* Promote cancer nursing within University Hospitals Sussex by presenting at conferences and producing
* Keep up to date on current evidence based practice within gynaecological cancers & palliative care through available resources, including internet
* Work with other nursing teams to promote Trust values
* Set up and develop new services to improve patient experience
* Active engagement in working differently to ensure best use of resources.

Qualifications
