Senior Manager, Hull Integrity

This role is hybrid, based in Weybridge, UK.

The Senior Manager, Hull Integrity & Lifecycle is responsible for the structural integrity, coating performance, and corrosion protection of the Royal Caribbean Group fleet throughout the vessel lifecycle. Operating within Marine Asset Management, the role provides the structural and coating technical layer that supports fleet-wide lifecycle planning, dry-dock scope development, and proactive asset preservation across approximately 70 vessels.

This position manages Steel Condition Assessment (SCA) programs, fleet-wide coating strategies, and tank maintenance operations, ensuring proactive monitoring and mitigation of hull degradation, corrosion, and coating breakdown. The role serves as the technical authority on structural matters to both shipboard and shore-based teams, working in close coordination with Marine Technical Operations (TechOps) for execution, Dry-Dock Planning for scope integration, and the broader Asset Management function for lifecycle cost analysis and capital planning.

A central requirement is ensuring that structural and coating condition data feeds into AMOS and the dry-dock module to enable data-driven planning, budgeting, and fleet-wide benchmarking. The role bridges technical assessment with commercial and lifecycle decision-making, consistent with Asset Management’s cross‑functional coordination mandate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Steel Condition Assessment & Hull Integrity Management

* Develop and manage fleet-wide Steel Condition Assessment (SCA) schemes, establishing risk‑based inspection programs that account for vessel age, service profile, structural history, and classification society survey cycles.
* Define inspection methodologies including ultrasonic thickness (UT) measurement strategies, visual inspection standards, and condition rating systems standardized across the fleet.
* Monitor corrosion rates, structural fatigue indicators, and critical structural areas across all vessel classes, maintaining centralized databases of steel condition, trends, and risk ratings.
* Define repair strategies and steel renewal scopes for dry‑dock execution in close collaboration with Marine Technical Operations, ensuring technical input is provided to the Senior Manager, Dry‑Dock Planning for scope coordination and budget integration.
* Lead dialogue with external UTM vendors, ensuring sufficient follow‑up on measurement campaigns in coordination with TechOps stakeholders.
* Provide structural condition data and lifecycle projections into AMOS‑X and the dry‑dock module to support proactive planning, budgeting, and the 1‑in‑5 dry‑dock initiative.

Coating & Corrosion Protection Management

* Develop and implement fleet‑wide coating management strategies for hull, ballast/grey tanks, void spaces, and critical structural areas.
* Define coating specifications, selection standards, and application procedures, interfacing with coating manufacturers and suppliers for product evaluation and performance benchmarking.
* Monitor coating condition, breakdown mechanisms, and performance trends, establishing inspection and rating methodologies (e.g., coating condition index) integrated with steel condition assessments to drive corrosion risk modelling.
* Define maintenance strategies including spot repairs, full recoating, and preservation programs, with clear lifecycle cost justification.
* Ensure compliance with relevant standards including IMO Performance Standards for Protective Coatings (PSPC) for ballast tanks.

Dry‑Dock Technical Support

* Provide steel renewal and coating scope input to the Senior Manager, Dry‑Dock Planning for integration into consolidated dry‑dock specifications and budgets.
* Optimize sequencing of steel and coating works to reduce cost, schedule impact, and vessel out‑of‑service time.
* Support onboard inspections and supervise critical repair and coating activities during dry‑dock periods.
* Ensure QA/QC for coating application including surface preparation, dry film thickness (DFT) measurement, and environmental condition compliance.
* Evaluate contractor and shipyard performance on steel and coating quality, providing input to the post‑docking performance reviews.
* Provide input into the AMOS dry‑dock module within area of responsibility for proactive planning and budgeting.

Structural & Coating Risk Assessment and Incident Support

* Provide expert technical support in cases of hull damage, coating failures, accelerated corrosion, or structural defects, including root‑cause analysis and corrective action recommendations.
* Define operational limitations when structural integrity is impacted, coordinating with Classification Societies, Flag State, and P&I Clubs as required.
* Act as subject matter expert for Class, Flag State, insurers, and internal stakeholders on structural and coating matters.

Vessel Performance & Hull Efficiency

* Monitor the impact of hull condition and coating performance on hydrodynamic resistance and fuel efficiency in coordination with the Energy Efficiency team.
* Support hull cleaning, polishing, and advanced coating solutions including low‑friction and fouling‑release systems.
* Contribute to energy efficiency initiatives and emissions reduction programs (CII/EEXI improvements) through hull and coating optimization.

Cross‑Functional Coordination & AMOS Integration

* Ensure structural and coating condition data is captured, maintained, and accessible within AMOS‑X to support fleet‑wide analytics, lifecycle planning, and benchmarking.
* Coordinate with the AMOS Operations team (Manager, AMOS Technical Systems) on data standards, reporting requirements, and module configuration for hull integrity tracking.
* Collaborate with the Asset Strategy & Lifecycle Management pillar (Senior Manager) on capital planning inputs, lifecycle cost modelling, and fleet‑wide asset health reporting.
* Support the development of fleet standards for structural integrity and coating systems, providing training and technical guidance to shipboard teams and superintendents.
* Develop and manage CAPEX budget components for steel renewal and coating programs, including cost forecasts, business case justifications, and ROI analyses for Capital Appropriation Requests (CARs).
* Provide lifecycle cost analysis and replacement timing recommendations for structural and coating assets to support fleet‑wide capital planning.

Qualifications / Skills

Education

* Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution (international equivalents accepted).
* Professional certifications in corrosion engineering, coating inspection (e.g., NACE/AMPP, FROSIO), or asset management (e.g., IAM) considered a strong advantage.

Experience

* Minimum 8–10 years of progressive experience in ship structural management, hull integrity, or marine coating systems, with at least 5 years in a shore‑based technical management role.
* Strong expertise in hull structures, corrosion mechanisms, and marine coating systems across diverse vessel types.
* Experience with Steel Condition Assessment programs, UT measurement campaigns, and ESP/structural survey requirements.
* Demonstrated experience with coating inspection standards, PSPC requirements, and QA/QC processes for marine coating applications.
* Direct experience supporting dry‑dock steel renewal and coating projects, including scope development and contractor management.

Technical Skills

* Deep understanding of classification society structural requirements (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register) and maritime regulatory frameworks (SOLAS, MARPOL).
* Proficiency in AMOS or equivalent CMMS platforms, with the ability to define data requirements and work within established data governance frameworks.
* Strong practical knowledge of steel repair processes, welding standards, and coating application techniques.
* Data‑driven approach to lifecycle maintenance planning, condition monitoring, and risk‑based decision‑making.
* Ability to balance technical, operational, and commercial considerations in asset management decisions.
* Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills across shipboard, shore‑side, and executive audiences.
* Systems thinking mindset, understanding how structural and coating condition data connects to broader lifecycle planning, capital budgeting, and fleet optimization.
* Continuous improvement orientation with a focus on standardization and fleet‑wide consistency.
* Ethical standards and integrity in safety‑critical decision‑making and regulatory compliance.

Working Conditions

* Office‑based position within GMO / Marine Technology, Weybridge, UK.
* Regular travel required (approximately 20–40%) including vessel inspections, dry‑dock attendance, shipyard evaluations, and UTM campaign oversight.
