Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated doctor to join our talented and hardworking team at The South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. The post will require right to work in UK and current GMC registration.
Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).
Based at Epsom General Hospital, SWLEOC is a partnership commissioned by four South West London acute hospital Trusts and provides routine and complex elective and non‑urgent emergency orthopaedic surgery services to patients aged over 18.
SWLEOC was rated as Outstanding by the CQC in their 2016 report. SWLEOC is the largest hip and knee replacement centre in the UK and one of the largest in the world. It performs around 5,200 procedures per year with some patients referred from around the UK and internationally. Sub‑specialties include hip and knee arthroplasty and revisions surgery, a young adult hip service, shoulder and elbow soft‑tissue and arthroplasty surgery and spinal surgery.
There is a 27‑bed inpatient ward and a 24‑bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), which includes a Day Case Unit, all of which are covered by consultant intensivists. There is an outpatients department for clinics and research clinics. There are six laminar‑flow operating theatres.
Responsibilities
You will be expected to spend four and a half days a week on clinical responsibilities. These duties will involve serving as first assistant to Consultant Surgeons in theatres and attending one or two clinics per week: assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with lower limb issues, including OA and soft‑tissue, explaining treatment options and associated risks to patients, listing them for surgery where appropriate, and performing the procedures with guidance from Consultants.
We are seeking a dedicated Orthopaedic Specialty Doctor to join our team. The successful candidate will provide first assistant support to anaesthetist during surgical procedures including major joint replacements and revisional surgery. This role requires strong clinical skills, effective patient communication, and close collaboration with the surgical team to ensure high‑quality patient care.
Details
The post is full time, 40 hours per week, the theatres run 6 days per week. This role does not include any on‑call commitments. There may also be additional work available on an ad hoc basis.
