Overview
Multi-skilled Carpenter – Positions may become available in the near future. We are looking for a qualified Carpenter to join the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) in the Estates department. You will work in a fast-paced environment delivering an excellent maintenance service directly to our customers.
Responsibilities
* Undertake reactive, planned, and preventative maintenance for all building fabric, structural and civils components and equipment (internal and external) installed throughout the University estate in compliance with current regulations.
* Carry out multi-skilled tasks where relevant training/experience can be demonstrated, such as electrical and mechanical fault finding, multi-trade fabric repairs and redecoration linked to reactive and planned maintenance work.
* Be part of a mandatory out of hours 1 week in 5 on-call rota.
* Undertake first response fault finding and provide clear updates on remedial works for installations including but not limited to: (see general duties for scope).
* Building equipment repairs, ironmongery renewals, lock repairs and keys
* Automatic doors (mechanical parts), security locking maintenance, door repairs and installation
* Fire doors and all associated components, installation of fixed storage, repairs to fixed furniture in student accommodation
* Kitchen units, doors, drawer fronts and worktop replacements
* Work generally unsupervised to undertake tasks with own judgement to effect installation, adaption and repair work
* Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, complete dynamic risk assessments and method statements before carrying out maintenance
* Ensure paperwork is completed accurately and in a timely manner in line with service level agreements
* Attend development and training courses to keep abreast of industry best practice and statutory regulations
* Act as a competent person for Safe Systems of Work for relevant works
* Establish working relationships with key customers to improve service levels
* Assist with managing stock levels, maintaining tools, equipment and vehicles, and ensure safe keeping
* Maintain confidentiality and abide by health and safety and equality and diversity policies
* Carry out multi-disciplinary duties as required and commensurate with the post
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Hold a recognised apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification
* Experience in a reactive maintenance environment with substantial post-apprentice experience
* Demonstrate safe operation of woodworking machinery in a workshop environment
* Good understanding of health and safety requirements, including risk assessments and method statements
* Ability to work well in a team and independently, with good prioritisation skills
* Ability to solve problems and make decisions using initiative; escalate as required
* Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with customers and other departments
* A valid driving licence is necessary to use the University fleet to reach all sites
Desirable Criteria
* Good knowledge of other trades (multi-skilled)
* Understanding of woodworking machinery safety and statutory PPM inspections
* Understanding of building regulations/construction
* Experience working on Listed buildings
Additional Information
Annual Health Surveillance assessments are required.
Salary and Benefits
* Salary Range: Min £27,644 – Max £30,805
