We are seeking a dedicated Food Safety Manager to join our team at our Gower Street site in Farnworth, Bolton. You will be based at this location. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, 37.5 hours per week. Flexibility will be required at times to travel across our estate and visit retail shops. The role involves developing and delivering the site’s and retail technical strategy, ensuring robust end‑to‑end controls, and fostering a culture of quality.
Responsibilities
* Ensure food safety compliance in retail outlets, focusing on preventing foodborne illness by controlling risks during handling, preparation, storage and display; prevent cross‑contamination; maintain proper hot/cold temperatures; ensure high personal hygiene standards; implement an HACCP base approach.
* Manage the QA function across intake, raw materials, storage and distribution of products to outlets.
* Collaborate closely with Retail Operation Managers, Area Sales Manager and the Senior Management Team.
* Participate in the site senior management team, contributing to operational decision‑making and aligning technical priorities with commercial objectives.
* Own food safety, legality, due diligence and product integrity across the supply base, ensuring consistently safe and compliant products in retail outlets.
* Ensure full compliance with all relevant standards, including BRCGS and Local Authorities.
* Establish, implement and maintain ethical compliance systems across suppliers and sites.
* Create, implement and continuously improve food safety and technical compliance strategies, policies and procedures within retail outlets and the QMS.
* Lead implementation and auditing of the Business Compliance Standards and internal audit programmes across all sites, driving best practice and continuous improvement.
* Manage supplier approval where necessary, assurance, compliance KPIs and the supplier assurance and compliance budget.
* Work closely with Retail Operations and Marketing to ensure products are developed and legally labelled for retail outlets.
* Partner with senior leadership and suppliers to maintain food safety and due diligence standards.
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience in a food retail environment and knowledge of food safety requirements for food retailers.
* Proven auditing experience within food manufacturing, storage and distribution for perishable food environments, with a strong technical background and understanding of food.
* Experience working across multiple food categories (including produce), multi‑site operations and with major retailers and foodservice customers.
* Strong people leadership capability/experience, with excellent communication skills and the ability to lead, develop and influence teams at all levels.
* Food safety compliance experience: 5 years (required).
* Food manufacturing/storage audit experience: 5 years (required).
Certifications
* HACCP Level 3 / 4 certification (required).
* Advanced Food Hygiene and HACCP Level 3‑4 certification.
