Job Description
Job Summary
* The London Borough of Sutton is seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist (Grade 8) to join the People’s Services team on a temporary basis.
* The role involves providing front-line occupational therapy services to residents with complex needs, promoting independence and supporting individuals to live safely within their homes and communities.
* The post holder will manage a caseload of clients, carry out assessments, recommend equipment and home adaptations, and deliver moving and handling interventions.
* Working collaboratively with other professionals, the Occupational Therapist will apply clinical reasoning and professional judgement to deliver person-centred outcomes while ensuring compliance with statutory frameworks and professional standards.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample)
* Manage a caseload of residents with complex needs, ensuring effective assessment and intervention planning.
* Conduct functional and environmental assessments within residents’ homes and community settings.
* Assess and recommend major and minor home adaptations to support independence and safety.
* Carry out moving and handling assessments, providing guidance on safe techniques and equipment.
* Recommend and arrange appropriate assistive equipment and adaptations to maximise independence.
* Apply clinical reasoning and professional judgement to complex situations involving risk and vulnerability.
* Work collaboratively with health professionals, social care teams, and partner agencies to deliver coordinated support.
* Promote safe independence in activities of daily living for adults with disabilities or health conditions.
* Maintain accurate case records, assessments, and reports in line with council policies and professional standards.
* Ensure practice complies with relevant legislation, professional standards, and safeguarding requirements.
* Participate in service development, professional supervision, and continuous professional development activities.
Skills/Experience
* Qualified Occupational Therapist with a recognised professional qualification.
* HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist (essential).
* Minimum 2+ years’ experience within social services or community-based occupational therapy.
* Strong experience in moving and handling assessments.
* Experience assessing for major and minor housing adaptations.
* Ability to manage a complex caseload effectively within a community setting.
* Experience working with adults with disabilities, long-term conditions, or complex needs.
* Strong knowledge of occupational therapy models, interventions, and clinical reasoning.
* Understanding of legislative frameworks, safeguarding, and social care policies.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with residents, families, and professionals.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
* Good IT skills for case recording, assessments, and service documentation.

* Working Pattern: Hybrid – approximately 3 days office / community visits.
* Minimum 2 years’ social services or community experience.
