Specialist - Chemical Hazard Evaluation - 30921
We are recruiting a regulatory scientist to assess the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under the UK REACH and CLP Regulations. Working in our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will evaluate ecotoxicity and environmental fate data, interpret safety assessments, and contribute to environmental classifications and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Assessing the reliability and relevance of environmental data and safety reports.
2. Summarizing and presenting environmental effects and fate data.
3. Describing test methods, data limitations, and uncertainties.
4. Determining environmental classifications under CLP and UK REACH standards.
5. Providing quality assurance reviews and alternative data interpretations.
6. Contributing to research priorities and test guideline development.
7. Supporting animal replacement methods and scientific support to government bodies.
8. Working within set timescales and collaborating with internal and external colleagues.
This role involves incident response duties, with training provided and potential additional payments. The team is part of the Research division within the Chief Scientist’s Group, supporting environmental regulation and chemical safety.
Minimum qualifications include a degree in a relevant scientific discipline (chemistry, biology, environmental science) and at least two years of applied experience in environmental hazard and risk assessment of chemicals, either in industry or at a national/international level. Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to work remotely and collaboratively.
